    We have to deal with some bitter cold weather when answering calls in the winter. If we’re smart we bring our gear inside and make sure it’s nice and warm when we go to put it on. We usually put on our gear by the side of the road near the fire scene. If your gear is warm then you’re fine, if its cold then you’re in trouble.     Coaches Harvey Thompson Jr. and Emily Gardner led a group of girls to a championship this past weekend in Malone. The North Franklin U-14 Girls Hockey Team competed in an U-14 tournament, defeating three other teams. In the first game, North Franklin easily defeated Malone 8-1.     Sunday night at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena, the Char Lan Rebels came and took the win over the Akwesasne Wolves with a score of 3-1.     In the past, when the McQuaid or Aquinas teams came to the small town of Fort  Covington they would go home as winners after defeating our Salmon River Shamrocks Boy’s Hockey team.  It was not the case on Friday or Saturday (January 25 and 26, 2008). On Friday, the Shamrocks shared the tie at 3 with Aquinas from Rochester.  The Shamrocks then defeated Rochester’s McQuaid with a 7-4 win in front of a good size crowd at the Tom Cavanaugh Arena.     Hockey spectators at Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall on Sunday, Jan. 27 included some Akwesasne faces who were there to cheer on two Ahkwesahsne team members: Amanda King and Cara Terrance. Sunday’s game was between the Potsdam Bears Women’s Hockey Club and Syracuse University.  Syracuse defeated Potsdam with a score of 5-2.     Tuesday night the Salmon River Lady Shamrocks faced off against the Saranac Lake Red Storm at the Tom Cavanaugh Arena. It was a tough battle for both teams but finally Alley Bero put Salmon on the scoreboard midway through the first period. Saranac opened their scoring in the second period to tie it up 1-1 only to be answered shortly by Katie Bero, ending the period 2-1.
