The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe discovered this week that the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino’s name has been used in an online sweepstakes scam that has victimized numerous people across the country. A company calling themselves “AKMO Financial” allegedly based out of Calgary, Canada apparently issued fraudulent “prize” checks in the neighborhood of $4,000 to an unknown number of U.S. residents. The owner of Dabiew’s Market in Bombay aligned with a New York assemblyman Monday in announcing their plan to file a tax fairness lawsuit against Gov. Eliot Spitzer and the state tax commissioner. A passport clinic held at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s community building Saturday helped to prepare tribal members for new federal regulations implemented by the U.S. government. Cornwall, Ontario - On January 23rd, 2008, at 10:40 p.m., an officer from the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service observed a suspicious 2007 Dodge Caravan traveling westbound on Island Road in Akwesasne, Ontario and then travel northbound towards Cornwall, Ontario. Several parents/caregivers along with their toddlers and preschoolers gathered to participate in the “Beginning With Books” Program. Each year the Massena Nursery School organizes a Kidfest – a carnival-like event at the J.W. Leary School that raises funds for the younger kids. Volunteers create games and run them, while visitors with their children of all ages purchase inexpensive tickets and make their way through the junior highs’ gymnasium.
