On January 26, 2015 the Salmon River Central School District Board of Education rejected a measure requiring photo identification for voters in school board elections by a vote of 6-3. Supporters of the ID requirement denied the association between possibly reducing Native voters and the large Akwesasne turnout that resulted in 2014 sweep of SRCS School Board seats by Akwesasne residents. “Not every single resident has proof of residence,” said board member Michael Conners Jr., who voiced his concerns about the effects voting requirements cou...

In a repeat of last year's state championship match, the Massena Red Raiders skated to a 5-3 win over the Ithaca Little Red. Massena wore its red road jerseys rather than home white shirts, and much of the crowd was clad in red. The game was played Friday, Jan. 23, which many marked as the "Wear Red For Fallen Raiders" day of tribute. After a stalemate first period, the Raiders fashioned a 3-1 lead in the second period and outscored their opponents 2-1 in the closing frame. Wyatt Wilmhurst put...

The Akwesasne club dug a deep hole for themselves, but late in the third period it looked like they were going to dig themselves out of it. Last week at the Benson Center the visiting Akwesasne Wolves Bantams gave up a 4-0 first and second period lead to Cornwall. Near the end of the second, Akwesasne's Preston Benedict scored their first goal to end the middle frame 5-1. Last weekend the North Franklin Shamrock Mites hockey club travelled to the Massena Arena to have a go against Massena. In this Mites division the rink is cut in half and there is only an opening faceoff. Penalties are penalty shots and the team that was just scored against takes possession after a goal. The little guys scooted up and down the ice, made finesse plays when needed, and gave high fives after big goals to the delight of the parents and other spectators....
The Akwesasne Wolves had some pretty goals last week. There just wasn't enough of them. On Cornwall Island last Saturday night the visiting Alexandria Glens scored three powerplay goals on the way to a 5-3 win. The Glens Eric Duguay and Connor MacLeod scored two early goals before the game was five minutes old. Brock Daze got the Wolves on the scoreboard late in the first on a two on one rush with Chris Wert. Glens' goalie Liam Lascelle went down and Daze shot over him for the goal. Midway...
