Swaddling Pediatricians recommend swaddling baby for sleep time during the first three months. Babies have the Moro or startle reflex until approximately 3 months of age, which causes them to flail their arms and legs and wake themselves up. Swaddling helps reduce awakenings caused by the startle reflex. Babies sleep better when swaddled and on their backs. The Slumber Swaddle™ with the...

  • Getting the LED Out

    Jan 29, 2015

Submitted by Paul Hetzler, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County It may be time to tell the CFL to get the LED out. No, the Canadian Football League doesn’t need to shape up, but there are some compelling reasons to think about switching from compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) to bulbs that use light-emitting diodes (LED). A diode is an essential component of all electronics, ensuring electricity flows only in the direction you want it to. The batteries integral to my home’s solar-electric system would “leak” their sun-gen...

  • Importance of Names

    Jan 29, 2015

Introduction of Own Name and Interpretation: A name is determined by your clan, gender, season, weather, or landmark event signifying the coming of a child. There are three main clans here amongst the Kanienkehaka Nation. They are Turtle, Wolf and Bear. According to tradition, the mother carries the clan and that will determine the name that the child will carry. When a girl is born the mother’s father or uncle will name the little girl (to prevent favoritism). When a boy is born, the father’s mother will name him (also to prevent fav...
