  • Event helps community members heal together

    Mary La France|Jan 21, 2010

Traditionally, a condolence ceremony is performed for those who are struggling with the death of a loved one and it is a ceremony that is unique to communities like Akwesasne. For those suffering, it is said that “their minds are on the floor.” They are unable to think clearly or function in their daily lives. Loss can come in many forms, including the loss of loved ones, a pet, a home to natural disaster, or even a job to an unforeseen circumstance. It is true that Akwesasne has seen a lot of...

  • Dear Editor

    Jan 21, 2010

Dear Editor, Lately, some people have been expressing negative feelings about the coming of a Mohawk Casino in Monticello. Among recent dialogue about Mohawk off-reservation gaming I found that there are many factual errors regarding the Monticello/St. Regis Mohawk development. Some fear that the Tribe is not able to manage a Casino, though the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino has been operating in the black for quite sometime now and is in fact managed and regulated by a sophisticated array of groups including the St. Regis Mohawk Gaming Commission,...

    Jan 21, 2010

By: Tracy Sunday-Cook, Former Tribal Gaming Commission Chairwoman I would like to address a few misconceptions being promoted in the community by the Anti-Sullivan County Casino group (The Vote No Group): First, The Tribe has mis-managed the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and would be out of their league in Monticello. This is not true. Indian Gaming is the MOST highly regulated industry in the nation. It has been over 20 years since the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed in 1988 and major strides have been made within the Indian gaming industry...

  • Weight Loss and Health Secrets with Jason Christoff

    Jan 21, 2010

In the last article I reviewed the first 3 action items that are detrimental for weight loss. Today we continue with the list. #7……medication toxicity. Many medications are associated with weight gain and/or stalled weight loss. The more toxic the medication, the more likely the body will refuse to decrease its’ water and fat stores, even if exercised or placed on diet. Medication toxicity is in my opinion the most common factor in failed weight loss attempts today. This includes both over the counter and prescription medication. Unfor...
