Massena Town Supervisor Joseph Gray announced last week that bringing a nuclear facility to the North Country could be the answer to Massena’s economic downturn. Although the project is still just an idea and has had no development, Gray and Massena Mayor James Hidy said they are hoping to hear public input and will go in the direction given by their constituents. Gray said no location has been determined for the project, but fear in Akwesasne is that the proposed nuclear project would be built at the now vacant GM Powertrain site in R...
Those who commute Cook Road regularly might have noticed a strange development that has progressed since mid-summer. It started with an adolescent dog with long chocolate brown mottled fur sitting roadside watching as cars drove by. To some the dog appeared to be waiting in vain for its master that would never return to bring the poor pup home. To others it was a nuisance breaking into the neighborhood garbage. Weeks went by and the dog remained until an unusual set of events began to take place...
Music lovers in Akwesasne and especially those who follow the Native American music industry will be treated this weekend to a performance by the fast-rising all Native DJ group A Tribe Called Red. Four DJs from different parts of Indian Country have come together to create a music blend like no other and critics are paying attention. A Tribe Called Red has been performing their “Electric Powwow” bimonthly at an Ottawa nightclub but their reputation has soared and this summer they’ll kick off a...
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s fairly new Animal Control Program has been cracking down on animal owners over the past two years and last week they announced they are now charging owners for each day their pet is held at the tribe’s animal shelter. “You have five days, and then I find a place for it,” said Animal Control Officer Jennifer Herne. The charge is $15 per day. Herne said that while she never patrols looking for stray or neglected dogs she receives dozens of phone calls a week from community members complaining about nuisance dogs. “The...
Parents and staff of AMBE’s Parent Committee have been working behind the scenes planning a special event to show appreciation for the students and their families. On Friday, January 15th, a Rock-N-Skate was held at the A’nowarako:wa Arena that was open to all AMBE families. Upon entry, all participants (including parents!) were entered into a drawing for their chance at 1 of 20 door prizes – everything from art kits to an Xbox. Upstairs, participants could take a break from skating and play board games and get creative with art, or they could...
By Lynn Roundpoint The idea for “Quilts for Tota’s” came from an article I read about a woman who wanted to save fabric from going into land fill sites, essentially fabric that was being thrown away. The woman was successful in her plight to save the fabric, but ended up with so much fabric she started to think of a way that she could contribute back to the common good. So she approached one of the larger corporations and teamed up with them in the “Downy Touch of Comfort Quilter Challenge”. It is a program that was developed to help provide q...

Submitted by D. O’Connell On Friday, January 14th, students and staff were encouraged to come to school wearing a moustache! This was an effort to promote school spirit and have fun. Many children and teachers created elaborate moustaches or drew ‘hair’ under their noses. Hopefully, no one used a permanent marker. Many participants enjoyed the fun day....
“What are some of the most memorable experiences you want people to take away from Akwesasne?” This is the question that Susan Fuller of Fuller Communications posed to the group that had gathered for a workshop this past Saturday morning. On behalf of the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA), Fuller Communications hosted the community workshop at the Office for the Aging to provide a comprehensive overview of the grassroots process being used in developing the North Country Scenic Byw...

There are 5 basic pillars of health. Those 5 pillars are food quality, proper sleep, clean water, exercise and proper rest. I have already reviewed proper sleep. If you would like a copy of that previous article please e-mail me personally at [email protected] Today I review food quality. Ancient cultures were well aware of the power of real food. Ancient cultures wasted no time naming the components of food or trying to describe how those components operated in the cycle of what we call “life”. Basically the most int...
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Environment Division developed this plan and the first of the series was in the last edition of Indian Time prior to the Christmas holidays. Current existing Documents The Tribal government is comprised of many organizations and entities that each have their own mission, vision, and direction to work toward. The IRMP core team examined and...

For the last two years I have been on Big Brother to stop picking his nose. If he blew his nose he’d be fine. His reply was, “Well mom I can’t always blow the hard ones that get stuck.” Little Brother now picks his nose religiously during the cold season and has been wiping it on things. I tried to teach Little Brother to blow his nose with a kleenex but he just blows air out of lips mimicking the sound of blowing your nose. Between the two of them I am either about to gag or get out cleaning supplies. Big Brother really thinks he’s sneaky bu...

Last week, the second s...

The 2011 Super Bowl is being held on Sunday, February 6th at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Cowboys Stadium is the home venue of the Dallas Cowboys and typically has a capacity of around 80,000 fans. For the Super Bowl the NFL will increase that capacity to over 100,000 people; so the 2011 Super Bowl will have the largest attendance in Super Bowl history. In attendance will be Massena native and Akwesasne Mohawk Casino You Pick ‘Em winner Tom Mitchell. “I still can’t believe I won,...
