A wild swing in temperatures coupled with a winter storm that dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas caused flooding in Akwesasne and the surrounding communities, and set a local temperature record. Temperatures in Akwesasne on Thursday, Jan. 11 spiked at 53 degrees and the following day got as high as 60 degrees,...
AKWESASNE—The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Planning Office is notifying local residents that a flood watch remains in effect for the following low-lying areas along the St. Regis River: St. Regis Road, North Street, Cree Road, Mose Cook Road and Cook Road (near Fountain Woods). A flood watch means that there is the potential for flooding. It does not mean that flooding will occur...it only means it is possible. It is also a recommendation for planning, preparation, and increased awareness. In response to the flood watch, the Emergency P...

Sekon, Hello: At the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal meeting on Saturday, January 6th, I was sitting next to a Tribal employee. He asked me if I attended the residency meetings. I told him yes. He then told me he was more concerned with the loss of the Mohawk Language. Shouldn’t they go together…If the population of the Mohawk people slowly dwindles doesn’t that mean the same for the language. They are teaching the language in our schools for our children and classes for our people outside of school as well. We have young intelligent Mohawks filling...

Shekon, Our children are our future! Sadly, one of the greatest threats to their future is child obesity. As you know, I completed the 2017 Quebec City Marathon (26.2 miles) and raised $3,800 to combat child obesity in Akwesasne. Next I will be running in the 2018 Ottawa Marathon on May 27 to raise funds to continue the battle versus child obesity in our community. 100% of the funds that I raise will go to Akwesasne’s Iakwa’shatste Youth Fitness, a wonderful non-profit organization whose main purpose is to provide expert fitness, nutrition and...

Submitted by Richard Gast I’ve been asked on four different occasions, recently, how tick populations will be impacted by the December/January below-zero cold. Some of those asking had heard reports, apparently claiming that tick populations would be decimated, if not eradicated, by the prolonged period of extremely cold weather. We’d all certainly welcome that. It’s probable that you or someone you know has been affected by ticks and/or by Lyme disease. And any downward pressure on tick populations is welcome. But, the answer isn’t that si...

If you are caring for a loved one with the flu, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and others. The main way that flu viruses spread is from person-to-person in droplets of coughs and sneezes. Flu viruses may also be spread when a person touches droplets on another person or an object and then touches their own mouth or nose (or someone else’s mouth or nose) before washing their hands. To prevent spread it is important to remember hand washing and to cover your cough or sneeze. Supplies to Keep on Hand • Thermometer • Soap • Dispo...

After being denied permits by New York State last year, the Constitution Pipeline had attempted to have the decision overturned on a federal level. The Constitution Pipeline has been in the works since 2013. It would run from Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania and through Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Schoharie counties in New York. But FERC ruled against the project late Thursday. Last April,...
