    During the continuous response to the great Ice Storm of ’98 (ten years ago this week) we began to wear down. Twice I tried to go home to get some rest. The first time I almost made it to the door when the radio came to life and we took off to answer an alarm. The next time I made it up the hill and had to turn around at a gas station.     This past Sunday the Akwesasne Jr. Indians were busy at the draft table for the upcoming season. During the Midget Priority draft they selected from Kahnawake, Tye Stacey, a 5’11 180 pound goaltender, also selected in the midget draft was Thor Grant a product of Cornwall minor lacrosse. Thor is the type of kid that may be able to adapt to the grinds of Jr. A lacrosse. Also over the weekend the Jr. A council hosted the dispersal draft of the now defunct Ottawa Titans players.     Recently, the Kana:takon Unit of the Boys and Girls Club enjoyed a night of hockey from the Junior “A” League team, the Cornwall Colts. The club members showed their support for their favorite players by cheering and holding up their hand made signs. The tickets were donated from the Colts’ captain, # 17 Darcy Findlay, and were greatly appreciated by the Kana:takon Unit of the Boys and Girls Club.     Coaches Roger Huiatt and Pat Martin have taken over management of the Black Knights of New York hockey club and have recruited several local hockey players to finish out the season with the team. Justin Delormier, Jacquis Harris, Aaron Jacobs, Jarett Jacobs, Lakota Jacobs, Max Shea, Wallace Thompson and Jake Treptow have been on or added to the team roster.     The Buffalo Bandits had highs and lows this weekend as they opened the season with first a home game followed by an immediate away game, taking a loss and a win. The National Lacrosse League team welcomed the Rochester Knighthawks on Friday and commuted one hour the following day to let Rochester host them. Goalie Mike Thompson, of Akwesasne, started for the Bandits during both games while Brandon Francis also racked up some playing minutes, representing Akwesasne.     The Salmon River Lady Shamrocks earned a 3-0 win at Saranac Lake on Tuesday January 15. Sky Timmons led the Shamrocks with two goals, with a single from Rori Francis-Herne. Karley Cree, Olivia Cook, Toni Garrow and Ieni Elijah all had one assist. Tameka Thompson had 25 saves.     The family of Ted Cook was present to share and witness the presentations made to him for all his accomplishments during and since his involvement at SRC. He wore #99 while he played for the Shamrocks. His jersey was presented to him as his family stood by and watched proudly. During his Varsity seasons, his team won the NY State Championships two times. The team ranked 4th in the Nation and was recalled to be the highest honor for any state team.
