The Salmon River Central School District is planning a massive upgrade that will likely begin this summer. The Salmon River Board of Education approved the project on January 7, 2008, following sever...

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe formally filed a lawsuit against Department of Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, following his office’s refusal to approve a land-into-trust application, and it might not be the only lawsuit the SRMT files. They are also considering a libel lawsuit against the New York Post. The land-into-trust application was tied to the Tribe’s pursuit of a Sullivan County Casino. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday, accuses the Secretary of making a decision that is “arbitrary and capricious, an abuse of discretion, has no basis...

The Broken Chain We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link aga...

  • Casino Rejection Cause for Reflection

    Doug George Kanentiio|Jan 17, 2008

The decision by the US Department of the Interior to reject the St. Regis Tribal Council’s plans for a Monticello casino has provided Akwesasne with an opportunity to reflect on commercial gambling in general and the Tribe’s goals specifically. We should take this time to inquire about Empire Resorts and its financial and administrative status. The company took a huge blow when the Monticello deal was turned down. It was already on shakey fiscal ground which has to call into question whether it was the right partner for the Tribe. Empire did...

This year, National Honor Society Advisor Lucy Patch, and her husband Dale, with student participation as well, thought up a fun theme. The school’s hallways and gymnasium were decorated in nautical style and attendees were meant to imagine they were on a cruise ship. Even a captain’s whe...

  • Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis

    Barbara Gray|Jan 17, 2008

Occasionally when one looks up into the night sky here at Akwesasne, they may capture a glimpse of shimmering curtains of lights dancing in the sky.  I remember one late August some 30 or more years ago when I first saw these lights here at Akwesasne.  It was a most beautiful sight, and it is very hard to find words to explain this most amazing celestial phenomenon. What I saw was varying shades of red curtain-like wispy shapes flickering ever so brilliantly in the sky.  My tota told me that what I was seeing was where our ancestors enter...

  • The Choice

    Delia McDonald|Jan 17, 2008

Yet again another stunning novel by Nicholas Sparks who really knows how to pull on your heartstrings. I have found that with Nicholas Sparks’ novels you experience love through his eyes. This is one of my favorite books by him. This is the story of Travis Parker and Gabby Holland. Travis, age 36, has never really been in love; his friends tell him that he is afraid of commitment because he can’t sustain a lasting relationship with a woman. He, as with all people with this problem, denies it. This all changes when Gabby Holland moves in next do...

  • New Year’s Resolutions

    An Anonymous Mother|Jan 17, 2008

I am finally back! Sorry about last week Grandma, I know you wait for updates on your great grandson. I’ve been busy the last few weeks. Not so much from running errands but running around at home. You see Baby T has refused to go any place since Christmas day. My guess is because he received his magical wish list of toys from Santa and we made him leave it all before he could play with it. So once he got home he stayed home. Besides school, he refuses to go the store, the mall, Tim Horton’s, or the library. All of which had always been demande...
