Submitted by Molly Ladouceur The holidays were a time for giving back at the St. Regis Mohawk School. This year, instead of exchanging gifts with classmates, the St. Regis Mohawk School student body worked together to give back to organizations that provide services to benefit the community. Each grade level selected an organization to which they felt a special connection and then decided how they could best show their gratitude and support. Following is a list of the organizations chosen by eac...
Tarbell Management Group presented the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group with a check for the amount of $1747.90 on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. This donation was made possible from TMG's Cancer Awareness Month (October) and Pink Out Day where a portion of the sale of pink donuts and .5 cents from each gallon of gas sold at each local Tim Horton's. A check was also presented to Mark Brackett of the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund for the same amount from proceeds of sales at the Massena Tim...
On Monday evening, January 12, 2015, there were some very busy young people along with some adults at the Snye Recreation location. It was a workshop called Gill Net Making, a tradition that used to be quite prevalent years ago when our river waters were healthy. Fishing was very important to every day life in our community and many times gill nets were used to catch certain fish. This workshop was sponsored by the Akwesasne Family Wellness Program and they invited the community to participate....

Terrance, who is currently ranked 3rd in NYS, is the first Massena wrestler to ever travel to Eastern States; the competition to get in is as tough as it is on the mat. Eastern States is now one of the toughest high school wrestling tournaments in the nation. The event took place on Friday and Saturday, January 9th and 10th, at the...

Dear Members of the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, and the Marine Corps Detachment #566, I am honored to have received a financial contribution from your organizations. My family has long been involved with the Legion, and I know firsthand how hard your members work to raise these funds. I am so appreciative that you found me a worthy cause. Growing up in a less privileged community has not only offered financial and academic challenges, but has also helped me realize the value of a college education.I can honestly say that...
To The Editor, I recently attended the first monthly community meeting of 2015. Those meetings are required to be held for the benefit of tribal members. I used to think of them as Tribal Council meetings but as time goes on, I realize that is the only place where all of the Chiefs will assemble, or most will assemble, most of the time, to be accountable to the tribal members. I guess that I have changed after going to these meetings. The voice of the elders in Akwesasne really seems to be coming along, as was seen at the meeting. There is a cl...
Letter to the Editor There is a series of 10 Ringing Cedars of Russia books similar to us that are serving to be an awakening for people worldwide. It’s set in the forest of Siberia and it centers on a woman who has great healing gifts, incredible links to the animals and plants around her, all types of extra sensory perception gifts, plus gifts of seeing backwards and forwards into history. [Our oral history talks of our people’s lost communication gifts, healing gifts, ESP gifts like riding a canoe in the air, and seeing through time.] She ta...
To The Editor, She:kon. I am writing to comment upon the holiday celebrations that we now call traditions. I honestly want to be grateful for what the basket drive and the mountain of toys does for our Akwesasne community. Many seniors in the community have expressed the disappointment with the basket drive, receiving only a small portion of fixings for a possible stew dinner when there was no meat of any kind included with this distribution. More thought should have been given to this. When the announcement of forty thousand dollars that was...

The Akwesasne Basket Drive and Toy Drive completed another year of providing families in need with fresh carrots and potatoes, fresh fruit, canned veggies, a box of stuffing, and a $20.00 gift certificate for a local food market; provisions for the makings of a holiday meal. Children 10 years old and younger were given a new age appropriate toy. Baskets were made according to the size of the family (individual), from small to ex-large. Seniors were given the choice of a small food basket or a...
January the month to start new, to start fresh and to start over. To do everything better; to be happier, be healthier, to be kinder to everyone. To spend more time with your family and friends and less on Facebook and Twitter and watching TV. While you can take any day of the year to start anew, January is the perfect month as it hosts the Longhouse Midwinter Ceremonies and of course, January 1st, New Years Day. January is also host to a number of other important and noteworthy “National Month” days such as; National Bath Safety Month National...
The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources voted 13-9 on January 8 to pass S. 1, “To Approve the Keystone XL Pipeline” – the first Senate bill of the 114th Congress. The bill was introduced two days earlier by Senators John Hoeven (R-ND) and Joe Manchin (D-WV). The controversial $8 billion Keystone XL Pipeline, a project of the massive Canadian-owned TransCanada Corporation, would carry more than 800,000 barrels of oil a day from tar sands in Alberta through Indian country and American states all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, if comp...
Whenever an individual passes into the spirit world it is our duty to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the departed. We do so for former New York State governor Mario Cuomo. His passing provides us with an opportunity to review his tenure while governor which, sadly, was not a good one with regards to the Iroquois. Mario Cuomo was once the Secretary of State for New York during a particularly dangerous time in our history. In 1974 a group of Mohawks had taken back an abandoned Girl Scouts camp near Eagle Bay, NY which they...
