  • Tales From the Station

    Adrian McDonald|Jan 10, 2008

Electrical Madness Did you miss me? I’m back with some stories of one of the great institutions here in Akwesasne: The Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department. The rules are the same, no names mentioned and all parties are innocent until proven hilarious. Ten years ago this week we were neck deep in fire calls due to a freak ice storm that lasted for five days. Our previous record for the number of calls in one month was 33. On January 5, 1998 we answered 35 alarms in a 24 hour period. The following day would have been another record b...

Ethan Seymour (formerly Tarbell) paid a quick, whirlwind visit to Indian Time on Tuesday all the way from Raquette. You can visit us again Ethan, you’re not in trouble!...

  • “Rotten Ice” Stay off the Ice!

    Barbara A Gray|Jan 10, 2008

The term “rotten ice” is an U.S. Coast Guard classification used to describe, usually in late winter, old melting ice.  It is also called weak or soft ice. This year with the warm days we have had, there will be many places on the river where there may be rotten ice.   When ice begins to thaw, the ice may be solid on the surface while unfrozen water may be channeling the underside.  Rotten ice is white, brittle, and mixed with snow or filled with air bubbles. This ice is very dangerous and can break under lightweights. Even the weight of one pe...
