  • Fire departments save snowmobiler from icy waters

    On Sunday, Jan. 6 the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department was called out when a snowmobiler fell through the ice off of Frasier’s Point, Quebec. The Fort Covington Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at the same time. Units from FCVFD responded immediately with Ice Rescue Gear and were followed by units from the HAVFD. The St. Anicet Fire Department was already on scene and all the units converged on Frasier’s Point within ten minutes.     Two men died in Akwesasne during the holidays. On Christmas Eve police and rescue teams were called to an area on the St. Lawrence River near Glen Walter after crew members on board a ship spotted a body floating in the water. Angus Oakes, 54 of Kana:takon (St. Regis), Akwesasne, was taken by boat to Summerstown where he was pronounced dead. A medical examiner later ruled the cause of death to be drowning.     A 37-year-old Akwesasne man went missing on Christmas Eve and police continue to search for clues as to his whereabouts. Alexander “Doonie” Vincent Jocko was reported missing by his girlfriend and family on Dec. 24, police said, but ongoing efforts to find him have been unsuccessful.     Mr. Angus Charles “Gussy Pooh” Oakes, age 54, of 3rd Street, Hilltop Drive, St. Regis, Quebec, died Monday (December 24, 2007) afternoon after he drowned in the St. Lawrence River.     Akwesasne- The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is encouraging community members to apply for the free home heating fuel as a part of the SRMT-CITGO program. As announced earlier, everyone must apply first to participate in the program and receive the fuel. All community members are eligible to apply.
