  • Iroquois Population Update

    Doug George Kanentiio|Jan 8, 2015

As much of the world enters the year 2015 it is time to assess the current Iroquois population and land area. On second thought, we might consider this the year 873 AS since it has been that long when Skennenrahowi formally established the Rotinosionni (Haudenosaunee in Seneca) Confederacy on the southern shore of Onondaga Lake during corn harvesting time and beneath a total eclipse of the sun. That would be on August 31, in 1142 ACE (or the old AD) at 2 PM. There was a time when the Iroquois numbered in the tens of thousands (perhaps as many...

  • Hemlock Wooly Adelgid

    Jan 8, 2015

Submitted by Paul Hetzler, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County Don’t look now, but the sky is falling. Again. This time it’s poised ominously over our hemlock trees, whose verdant canopies shade many a North Country stream and glen. Although hemlocks make lush hedges for home landscapes, they’re best known as stately forest giants that form cathedral-like stands in the Adirondacks and elsewhere. It’s hard to believe these titans are being killed by a tiny insect less than a sixteenth of an inch long. Native to Asia, the hem...

  • Why do cats purr?

    Jan 8, 2015

By Jennifer Herne, LVT I have often wondered why cats purr, as a vet tech I have seen cats in many different situations, fear, anxiety and contentment. I haven't seen many cats purr when they are in fear or when they are mad, but I have heard sick cats, nursing cats, and content cats purring. It obviously has something to do with their throats but what else is involved? There have been many theories over the years and most experts say the purring begins in the brain. A purr is defined as a rhyth...
