VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Jake Finkbonner knows what it’s like to have kids tease him because of the way he looks, but one of his heroes also grew up being teased. The 12-year-old boy said Kateri Tekakwitha, who was to become an official saint Oct. 21, was “an inspiration” because I remember reading that many of the children in her tribe teased her because of her faith, but she continued to praise God and she made ‘her own rosary.” “One of the things she always tried to do was spread her faith, even though her uncle and aunt didn’t really approv...
Hogansburg, N.Y. On June 30, 2012, Reverend Martin Cline announced, in consultation with Ogdensburg Bishop LaValley, “St. Patricks’ Church in Hogansburg would be closing its doors on June 29, 2013.” At present there are 27 families contributing envelopes toward the maintenance and upkeep of the church. The rectory sale price is $95,000.00; the church building with the land it sits on has a sale price o...
Vatican City (CNS) - Although separated from her by three centuries, an ocean and major cultural differences, Jesuit Father Paolo Molinari absolutely loves Kateri Tekakwitha, the Native American who will become a saint in October. While the 88-year-old Italian Jesuit was forced to give his successor most of the sainthood causes he still was actively promoting when he turned 80, “thank God, they let me keep Kateri.” Father Molinari, one of the church’s most prolific postulators – as the official promoters of causes are called –inherited Kateri’s...
The Shrine is about to open for the new season. It will be the beginning of something great and wonderful. Our new season will be full of surprises and full of wonder. Our Mohawk maiden, Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks, will be added to the Church’s litany of Saints. Blessed Kateri will now be known as Saint Kateri and with that we are all blessed. Kateri was declared Venerable in 1943, Beatified in 1980, and now will be raised to the highest honor in our Church and be canonized a saint on Oc...
A case of a miracle attributed to Kateri Tekawitha, known as the “Lily of the Mohawks,” has been sent to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints. If the Vatican declares the miracle credible, Kateri would become the first Native American saint, joining the Roman Catholic Church’s holy honor roll of saints. Monsignor Paul Lenz, former director of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, confirmed a miracle case file was sent, last month, to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Beatifications and Canonizations. He would not identify...
