    Twenty-five Akwesasne youth are spending two weeks this summer receiving interactive, in-depth lessons on the history of the Mohawk people and the cultures and traditions of both the past and present.   • Fire damages St. Hubert BBQ Restaurant

    A fire at Cornwall’s St. Hubert BBQ Restaurant Tuesday evening closed the eatery for the night but it was business as usual by Wednesday. The fire was reportedly in the Brookdale Avenue restaurant’s roof and sign steeple and was called into 911 at around 6 p.m. Cornwall firefighters took roughly three hours to completely extinguish the blaze. All customers and employees were evacuated and no injuries were reported. The restaurant said Wednesday that the inside of the building was not damaged and they remain open for business. The lacrosse team was forced to abandon their spot at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships when England refused to accept the team’s Haudenosaunee passports.   • NYS requiring new DWI offenders to install alcohol device on vehicles

    Beginning on Aug. 15, 2010, New York State will require that any person convicted of Driving While Intoxicated have a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device installed on any vehicle in their name. The device tests the driver’s breath and if alcohol is detected the vehicle can’t be started or will go into alarm mode to notify authorities.   • Children learn the rules of golf in summer program

    This summer 44 children are learning the ropes of golfing through the Snye Recreation’s Junior Golf Program. Every Tuesday the children are dropped off at Cedar View Golf Course for two and a half hours of instruction and play by local golf enthusiasts.     Several Akwesasne community members and business owners received a letter from the Bank of Montreal last week stating that their accounts are being closed as of July 19, 2010. Recipients of the letters received one by regular mail and another by registered mail in the first week of July, leaving them with two weeks to close all accounts and tie loose ends.     The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Conservation Department is without a boat after their 19-foot hydro yacht was stolen over the weekend from King’s Marina on the Snye Channel on June 27 or June 28.     New charges were brought against Jennifer Jackson-Laughing and her husband, Frank Laughing regarding a second document police say was forged. Laughing-Jackson and Laughing were initially arrested in May of this year when a police investigation uncovered that they had allegedly lied about their 4-year-old daughter having colon cancer and had benefited from the lie by collecting donations of money over a 4-5 month period.     On Monday, the New York State Legislature passed an emergency extension bill that will add an extra $1.60 in tax to every pack of cigarettes sold in the state. The bill also called for the state to begin enforcing an earlier law that was never enforced but which requires stores on Indian reservations to charge tax on tobacco products sold to non-Native customers.
