Five Ahkwesahsne senior students were honored and received their graduation chords along with one Junior and were all inducted into the National Honor Society on May 9th at the Massena Central School. The students are Jeff Cooke, Wahehson Lazore, Tyler Sunday, Kiowere Rourke, Erin Francis and Jr. Inductee Hunter Francis. Two artists entered their pieces into the Annual Juried Show in Cornwall on April 6 to May 10, 2013. Niioieron Perkins displayed a beautiful array of Iroquoian Raised Beadwork called “The Collectors.” Niioieron has become a well-known artist in fashion and beadwork in areas across the nation. On Wednesday April 17th, there were events that caused a very enjoyable day shared with students, teachers, family and friends alike. At the Utica College on this beautiful sunny day, many people gathered to witness a rededication of a Peace Tree Planting done by the late Jake Swamp already 25 years ago. During the last two weekends, the Massena Boys grade 7 and 8 travel team was invited to enter basketball tournaments at Peru and the latest in Oswego. In Peru, the boys began their play at noon and again in the afternoon. After winning two games on Saturday, the team played again on Sunday entering into the championship game against the Saranac Chiefs. The final was 47-38 as Saranac trailed closely behind. Richard Tahakie Peters was born on September 1, 1925. His place of birth, he claims was disputed between Ontario and Quebec due to the nonexistence of records. Our lady this week is Elaine Joyce Cook, Kanatatsenri.....born July 11, 1938. Elaine’s parents were Thomas Benedict and Annie Oakes. The memory she has of them is that her father used to work as a woodsman in Monette, Ontario. Later on, he began working in Cornwall at Howard Smith Paper Company. He walked across that bridge everyday in all seasons. When winter came it was so cold and he still had to walk, which eventually caused him to become ill with pneumonia and Tuberculosis. The tournament took place on August 18th and 19th at the Tackle Box Marina and Riverside Convenience Store on River Road, Tsi Snaihne. The owners, Tom and Danielle Oakes, have sponsored this fishing derby in memory of Tom’s father Louie, who was known as a legendary fisherman and guide in the local waters near his home. A Mixed Martial Arts event sanctioned by the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe took place at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino under the “big white tent”. Julia David (Tekonwakwenni) was born and raised on Cornwall Island. She was born on September 28, 1928 and grew up with one brother and three sisters. She is the only one left in her family. Julia spent much of her time with her grandparents Annie and Wishe Buckshot. Their home was on the corner of what is now James Lazore Memorial and River Rd., and Julia with her siblings were there often. Three children from Ahkwesahsne attended the Franklin County Fair to compete in the 4-H Horse Show in various classes. Carter King, age 5, and Millie, age 9, are the children of Pudgie and Aaron King. This is Millie’s third year and Carter’s first and both have learned so much about their horses and showmanship. The American Legion Post #1479 sponsored volunteers to oversee the display of the Vietnam Memorial Wall to come to Ahkwesahsne, after the request to have it visit our community, for almost a week. Duties for the volunteers involved security, assembly and disassembly, food preparation, packing, cleanup and many other jobs to make sure the Wall was safe and the viewing gets carried through. Shirley Jacobs, was born October 14, 1934, was born in a house in Kanatakon, raised on Cornwall Island, and later returned to Kanatakon. Well, Shawn Hawk did what he said he would do as he fought Eleider Alvarez in the boxing match up this past Friday night at the Bell Centre, Montreal. It was a unanimous decision after 12 rounds by the judges and witnessed by a center of spectators. Native American boxer Shawn Hawk, a Hunkpati Sioux, hails from the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. He and his trainer Eric Riley from the White Mountain Apache Tribe, Arizona, stopped to visit Ahkwesahsne for a couple of hours with good friend Art. The Frank West Tournament was held on the weekend of March 2-4 at the Massena Central high school gymnasium. The grade 7 and 8 Travel Team from Massena had a successful championship after beating five area teams. The first game they defeated Clifton Fine, next was Brushton-Moira, then Gloucester “B”.
