    Recently, a very important issue has surfaced with the use of our Kanienkeha given names. Originally, our people in Ahkwesahsne were given one name at birth in a ceremony and this served the purpose of identification. That system was good judgment by our native communities and followed the Traditional way of naming children following a Matrilineal Society and Clan order. This system is still strong in our customs.     On Sunday afternoon, August 24, 2014, the annual quilt auction took place at the Akwesasne Freedom School grounds with many people present. Also on this day, was the steak and cornbread sale along with the Silent Auction held inside the school with beautiful items donated by the parents of the students who attend this Mohawk immersion school running into its 30th year of operation.     Recently, there were very nice visits to two young ladies after returning from China. Mesa Cole and Kariwiiostha Dupree had earned their spots on the list to make this trip after review of their applications. Mesa is a student at Massena Central and entering grade 11 while Kariwiiostha attends Salmon River Central this year a sophomore.     The Akwesasne Young Riders 4-H Club involves a group of young people who are very busy with their horses in the care, feeding and riding skills. There are 6 members presently.
