The Salmon River Girls Hockey Team have ended their season with a record of 4 wins, 2ties, and 14 losses over-all. Thank you to the coaches Jim Barnes and Liz Durfee for helping them out. They will not be in the play-offs this time. Next season will be a time for rebuilding after losing so many seniors. Good luck to all the seniors and we’ll see the rest of the team next year!...
Wednesday night’s boys varsity hockey game between Alexandria Bay and Salmon River included a special demonstration in honor of the late Wayne Castor. After the first period of the game a presentation was made by Ken Kane of Kahnawake. On Friday night, one of the most exciting girls basketball games took place between Salmon River and Madrid Waddington. It was a nail biter from start to finish and the gymnasium was filled with spectators from both teams. Ogdensburg hosted the Don Goult Memorial Basketball Tournament this past weekend welcoming teams from Harrisville, Heuvelton, and Massena to compete against Ogdensburg and each other. Massena’s 6th grade team faced the Ogdensburg Blue Devils in their first game and won. For the months of September, October and November, students were chosen by their coaches and finally selected by the Hall of Fame committee to be the official athlete students of the month. The students are honored for their athletic skills and they’re additionally recognized for their character on and off the field, floor or ice. On Tuesday evening, a basketball game was held at the Salmon River Central gymnasium. Colton Pierrepont came over to compete against the strength of the Shamrock ladies. On December 4, the grade 5 and 6 Robotics Team from Massena’s Jefferson Elementary School came home with the first place championship award from Clarkson University’s robotics competition. On October 23 - October 28, another Salmon River Central student was chosen to visit Washington DC after being nominated by someone who believed in him. Jonas Gray, grade 7, was invited to go on this trip sponsored by The Congressional Young Leaders Council. He was nominated by Rachelle Hayes who works at the St. Regis Mohawk School. SRC girls traveled to Massena to get a feel for the teams ability with returning Coach Jim Barnes. Salmon River came out on top and by watching these teams go at it, is an indicator that it will be an enjoyable season. The Massena team also has some girls from Ahkwesahsne. The atmosphere of the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena on Saturday evening was filled with excitement, as the first ever professional hockey game took place on Akwesasne Ice. The crowd around the arena was estimated to be at about 1700 in attendance. The realization of having a pro hockey game taking place in Akwesasne is like a dream come true for many. On Monday Nov. 1 the Salmon River Central Girls Soccer Team faced Ogdensburg in a game to decide which team would advance to the final Class B final on Friday. The first half was action packed as the Shamrocks eventually went on to take the win on a score of 4-2. It was a disappointing loss for the Shamrock ladies in Volleyball action after they lost the first three sets to Potsdam at the Massena gymnasium. This class C championship took place on Friday October 29th in front of many fans and supporters of the 1st place ranked team, SRC. The scores were 25-22, 27-25, and 25-19. The Massena Red Raiders Football Team faced the Potsdam Sandstoners on a beautiful fall afternoon at the home field of Massena, Mike Nicholas Field. Although the Raiders lost to Potsdam 32-0, the team gave a very strong showing while missing some of their key players to injury.
