Ninety-one years ago, September 26, 1920, a little girl was born at Christie’s Island on the St. Lawrence River within the territory of Ahkwesahsne. The Akwesasne Sports girls soccer team faced off against a team from Heuvelton this past Tuesday night at the Generations field. The St. Regis Mohawk School Graduation was on June 17, 2011. It was a beautiful breezy day when no other could have been more perfect for these young people as they were leaving their childhood school. So many of them wore the traditional outfits, some made by moms, aunties and totas. Twelve special ones were made by the students themselves after school. These are some of the grade six students who began sewing after school to complete their ribbon shirts and dresses for graduation. They began working on their clothing in January, staying after school once a week with helpers Leanne King and Mrs. King. This was an enjoyable time together and it was obvious that each student enjoyed the projects, especially when Leanne brought in snacks. The Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis was the site for the Robotics Competition named FIRST, which stands for ‘For Inspiration Recognition of Science and Technology’. A team of 5th and 6th graders from Jefferson Elementary School had advanced to the national level. The team is called the Jefferson Jaguars Robotics Team. Dan White has been painting and sketching for a few years now and his newest talent is really showing itself. He usually works with acrylics and this is his first completed drawing of Chief Joseph in pencil. He has his artwork for sale at very reasonable prices and available at his home in Frogtown. On March 6, a second annual girls hockey tournament was held in memory of Katsitsientha Barnes. Many people remember this young lady as a quiet, caring, gentle and sometimes silly with friends type of girl. Her love for horses and hockey were so evident and being with her family and her friends were her best times. She will always be remembered by so many people. On Saturday, the Blue Team had played their second game to be the best out of 3. Going into Saturday’s game the girls lost one and won a game. Because of their victory on Saturday against the Black Team (5-2), the Blue Team can advance to play Tuesday night against the Red Team. The Salmon River Girls Basketball Team defeated Chateaugay with a score of 52-28 in front of a large crowd. Some of the Massena spectators stayed on to watch for the team that would play them next on Friday night March 4. The North Franklin Basketball team and the team from Massena were the only local teams who entered the tournament at Ellenburg on the weekend of the 29th and 30th. Other teams that joined were placed in a “A” and “B” division. It was fast action competition all weekend and saw so many talented players.
