On Sunday January 13th, 2013 a try out was hosted by Toby Sunday, Vice President of the Akwesasne Minor Hockey Association. Approximately 67 children showed up to show off their hockey skills and try for one of the spots on one of the four teams, Tyke, Novice, Atom and Peewee. On Sunday morning, the American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion joined together to host Breakfast with Santa. Members could sign up family from infant to 12 years old to visit Santa and get a present. On Friday, Iakhihsohtha Home for the Elderly hosted students from the Kanatakon School in the Skawatsira Program for a Santa Hat Strut. Students wore hats of all shapes and sizes and were judged in the categories of prettiest, most festive and homemade. On Sunday, the Seniors Center in Hogansburg was busy with managers from several MCA programs for the community dinner and snow suit drive sponsored by the MCA Department of Community and Social Services. Last Wednesday, November 21, the 13U Akwesasne Attack Lacrosse team held a benefit at Tsi Snaihne School. On Sunday, the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group hosted its third annual Hats for Hope at the Seniors Center. Often during chemotherapy, cancer patients will lose their hair and these hats are meant to not only keep their heads warm stylishly, but also put a smile on their face and let them know that someone cares. The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino held its grand opening of Cascades on Thursday. Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Chiefs Paul Thompson, Ron LaFrance and Randy Hart were in attendance. On Thursday night the acting CKON Board of Directors held a special meeting to fill a vacancy. HAVFD station # 1 was nearly empty as only a handful community members attended. President Jerry Cook introduced the current acting board and explained the staggered memberships. He then called for nominations of the vacant seat. Irene Cook nominated Barbara Montour, and the nomination was seconded by Jimmy Cook. On Tuesday, the Tarbell Management Group presented a check to the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group from monies they raised on and around Pink Out Day. Pink Out Day was October 27th 2012 and meant to raise awareness for breast cancer. There were cancer survivors on site to support the cause and all Bears Den stores participated in some way. It was an excellent turnout for the Diabetes Extravaganza held at the Let’s Get Healthy Program Office on Friday. The room was filled with educational booths with people who could answer questions about any topic related to diabetes. On Tuesday, a collaborative effort of Tribal, State and Federal levels came together in the name of conserving lake sturgeon. It all started in June when eggs were collected from sturgeon at Hawkins Point. Last Thursday, about 45 volunteers morphed into frightening zombies and crouched in the bushes on the Salmon River cross country trail. In all, about 75 kids wearing belts with red flags went through the trail dodging the zombies and several obstacles. The kids had to make it around huge spider webs, through man-made tunnels, under nets and over ropes, and the final obstacle: a high wall the kids had to climb over. On Friday October 12, the St. Regis Mohawk School held its Fall Festival. It was a beautiful day despite the cold wind, and the turnout was fantastic with lots of parents coming to enjoy the day.
