Ken Sharrow can remember his father playing in a Softball League in the 1960’s that went all the way to the championship. He remembers when Alma Ransom, Lena Martin, Greta Barnes among others, playing with his dad. For a couple of years now he has been thinking of starting a softball league with these memories being a driving force. This year he made it happen, forming the Akwesasne Co-ed Softball League. On Friday, Lynn Thompson presented a check amounting $5,000 on behalf of the Akwesasne Convenient Store Association to PJ Burns to support the 2013 Kids for Fishing. Kids for Fishing is an event centered around prevention and will include presentations on topics like drug and alcohol prevention and boating safety and, of course, a whole lot of fishing! On Friday, the K4 class at Kanatakon School put on a spring concert for their families. Alice King said that they have been practicing the songs for a while. They were directed by teachers Lynell Oakes-Cook and Sheri Lazore. The students sang “Ohniwenhnisero:ten?” (weather), “Kakwitene nikahawi” and “Ohkwar:tare.” The concert was followed by snacks in the classroom, which were well deserved. MCA Administrative building 1 was the scene last Thursday of a bake sale, silent auction and 50/50 raffle to benefit Yvonne Miller. The benefit was a success, in fact it was supposed to end at 3pm, but teachers wanted in on the action so it went another hour to 4pm. Darlene Francis came up with the idea. On Saturday, the Akwesasne Mini Mart held its grand opening celebration. They gave away t-shirts, a mini lunch of hot dogs and chips and CKON was broadcasting live on location. They also gave away a barbeque package that was won by Angela Bero, and a blu-ray player along with movies and popcorn that was won by Bill Sunday. On Thursday, a concert to benefit Emily Tarbell was held at the St. Regis Mohawk School, the event organizer - 10 year old Macy David. Macy told me that “My family has been planning to do something for my Auntie Emily and I wanted to have a concert for her, cause I’m in band. Last Wednesday, LifeNet of New York hosted Helicopter Landing Zone Operations Training for area first responders. Randy Montour, Second Chief of Massena Rescue and Norm Worden, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Massena Rescue, organized the class. The Great New York State Fair runs this year from August 22nd to September 2nd and Kenneth Thompson and Glen Lazore are gearing up already for the Iroquois Indian Village. The village is run by the Six Nations Agricultural Society, which consists of all of the Iroquois Reserves in New York State. Alleghany, Cattaraugus and Tonawanda Senecas, Tuscaroras, Oneidas, Mohawk and Onondagas are all represented. Cayugas come from Cattaraugus with 2 membership rolls from Seneca and Cayuga. On Thursday, a benefit Comedy Show was held at the Snye Rec. for Maya Swamp and Sarahlee Skidders. The show included a viewing of “Diary of a Mad Mohawk Woman” and the premiere of “Diary of a Mad Mohawk Woman 2,” which was directed by Kanera Phillips. Kahontineh Swamp said the film was made with the idea to have a drug and alcohol free activity, and the second film saw many more participants. On Tuesday, the Snye Rec. was the site of the Family Health Fair, a collaborative effort between Catherine Ciampini a Registered Dietitian, and Debbie Mayer a Community Health Nurse. The event started with family fitness activities including what looked to be very invigorating dancing. After only two weeks since the last Gun Buy Back program the guns are still pouring in. On Tuesday, what was supposed to go until 6pm, had to end around 2pm because the $4,000 that the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe had given for the program was already used up.
