The Seniors Club Annual Food and Craft Show was held on Saturday at the Seniors Center. The Center was jam packed with vendors selling dolls, quilts, beadwork, knit work and jewelry, just to name a few items available for sale. On Wednesday, the Kanatakon School celebrated its first Awards Assembly of the school year for the month of September. Principal Alice King emceed the event. Last Wednesday morning, the Kanatakon School practiced Bus Safety. The kids were taught what to do if there was an emergency situation while they were on the bus, for example a fire. The Onkwehon:we Arts Council (OAC) is bringing the community “Alight at Night with the Arts” this Saturday September 21 at the St. Regis Recreation. The event will start at 7pm and go until 10pm. On Saturday, CKON celebrated a Loyal Listener Appreciation Day. It was held at HAVFD #1 and hundreds came out for the event. On Thursday, Truckstop #9, Three Feathers Internet Cafe, RezPhones and Pig Pen Chip Stand wrapped up the summer with some fantastic giveaways to show their appreciation to all of their customers at their Customer Appreciation Day. On Sunday, Andria Cooke held a Speaking Circle at Smoking Arrow, the first of what she hopes will be many. You may just think, as the name Smoking Arrow suggests, it is just another smoke shop. It’s been so many years that Valerie Garrow can’t even remember how many book sales the Akwesasne Library has held. But it comes once a year, usually for two weeks at the end of summer. Many of the books are donated to the library but some are from the library shelves. The book sale is in the garage in back of the library. As an MCA summer student, graduate Ross Lafrance spent about 3 months with ACFS, from the beginning of June to almost the end of August. He spent his summer between the ACFS offices and the ACFS Summer Program at the Snye Recreation. His title was Youth Prevention Worker/Program Presenter. The celebration was held at the St. Regis Mohawk School and started with a newspaper fashion show, after which a talent show began. The Senior Center held an appreciation lunch on Monday for everyone who helped after the flood that happened on June 15. Director Kallen Martin explained that it was a big effort. At least 2 inches of water sat on the floor. The laminate flooring began to bubble up after it finally dried, and it was clear that the floor had to be replaced. The talent show at the Franklin County Fair proved to be fruitful for Akwesasne. Brandon Gambill took third place for singing in the 19+ age category and Raylynn Sunday took first place for hoop dancing in the 14-18 age category. The talent show started with an elimination round where three judges only let six competitors into the finals. There were three age groups: an under 13, a 14-18 and a 19 and up. It certainly was a party on Friday at the Snye Rec as the ACFS Summer Program wrapped up with a barbecue, music, waterslide, games and Ironman. This year the Summer Program had almost 70 kids. On August 1 the Tewathahita Walking Trail was stroller central as dozens of parents walked to support breastfeeding. August is national breastfeeding month and the first week in August is World Breastfeeding week. Many towns put on a support walk. The Akwesasne Youth Leadership group is planning a trip to Oneida, Ontario from August 14 to the 18 to hear the recital of the Great Law. They hope to have 6 to 8 people and their families make the trip. Chief Abram Benedict opened the presentation congratulating the students and thanking the sponsors, Enbridge Gas and Bank of Montreal, for their years of partnership. Raquette Point Rd was shut down to traffic early Wednesday morning due to a fire that broke out at Big Boys Gas Bar.
