On Monday night, with an escort from Tribal Police, dozens of people braved the wind and took part in the Light the Way to Hope Walk. This event was part of National Aboriginal Addiction Awareness Week activities. On Tuesday night, the Senior Center was filled with ladies for an event called "An Evening with Women in Recovery." This event was part of the National Aboriginal Addiction Awareness Week activities. On Veterans Day, the American Legion held a ceremony to honor veterans. Fifty-year member Mary Francis guessed they have been doing the event for close to that many years. The official speech, prayers, color guard and salute was held on Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., the date and time of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. Recently Jefferson Community College announced the winners of the 2013 North Country Writers Contest. Among the winners, winning Honorable mention in the Poetry genre was Shannel Garrow of Hogansburg for her poem “Sage.” The Writers Contest included the genres Short Fiction, Poetry and Essay/Non-Fiction. On Monday morning Tom Murray stopped by CKON to honor Andy White by putting his name on a plaque dedicated to those who volunteer their time to the community through music. The Kanatakon School has another teaching implement to work with. A book by Robert Munsch titled "Love You Forever" has been translated into Mohawk. Mr. Munsch was contacted and gladly gave permission for the use of his book, and "Tsi Nen:we Enkonnoronhkhwake" was created. On a blustery Sunday afternoon the CATS Spay and Neuter program held its second annual "Strut Your Mutt" at Generations park. The pavilion looked wonderful thanks to the folks from the Partridge House who volunteered, and though it was very cold, many showed up for a great cause. On Sunday October 20, 2013 the First Anniversary Celebration of the Canonization of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was held. A mass at the St. Regis church started off the celebration and a dinner reception followed at the St. Regis Recreation. The event was sponsored by the Akwesasne Kateri Prayer Circle. Last week HAVFD Station # 1 held Fire Prevention Week activities for St. Regis Mohawk School students. Over the 3 days of activities, about 400 students came through the fire station. Last Wednesday night, HAVFD Station # 3 held an open house to celebrate Fire Prevention Week and opened the Snye station to the public. RJ Joseph (Cree), owner of Moccasin Path Productions talked about his experience as a film maker and shared many important tips for attendees that are interested in film making. On Friday October 11, AK Gas and Tobacco celebrated its 18th year serving Akwesasne. The parking lot was packed with vendors and the store had many specials. The Kanatakon School had lots of visitors last week. On Wednesday morning, students got to spend some time outside to learn how to wash corn. Chester Thompson from Kanenhsto:hare went through the process step by step for the children. On Thursday, the children had a meal of corn soup and fried bread. On Friday October 11, HAVFD Station 1 was the spot for a benefit for Helen Angela Lazore. The benefit was to raise funds for medical expenses, and Station 1 was buzzing with Helen’s family. The rain didn’t keep people from the fishing on Sunday at the 19th Annual Noah Thompson Memorial Fishing Derby. Seventy-six adults and 18 kids fished for bass, perch and cash over the weekend at the Thompson residence in Kanatakon. And who could miss that meal? This past July, the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club received $41,000 through a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of America and the Lowe’s Charitable & Education Foundation to complete renovations at the Clubhouse.
