The Salmon River Central Middle School Band, under the direction of Cindy Healy, travelled to the St. Regis Mohawk School before holiday break and performed songs for students and staff. The Tsi Snaihne Child Care Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary. They have been open since 1993. RECE Supervisor Tracy Jacobs said, "The kids have been making 20th anniversary artwork." Last Wednesday night, Akwesasne Toastmasters held an open house at the Human Resources Building for their last meeting of the year. The theme of the evening was "Fairytale of New York," which is a Christmas song. On Tuesday December 10th, members of several police agencies travelled to Iakhihsohtha to sing Christmas carols to Elders. Members of Tribal Police, AMPS, RCMP, OPP and some retired officials from these agencies, brought their singing voices, along with Santa Claus and the RCMP Safety Bear. St. Regis Mohawk School students who got Student of the Month for November were treated to an ice cream social with the Principal on Friday. Principal Thomas led the kids in an "I scream for ice cream" cheer and the party was started. Students were served vanilla ice cream and had a smorgasbord of toppings to choose from including chocolate, strawberry and caramel syrup, sprinkles, chocolate chips, bananas, marshmallows and whip cream. On Thursday night, St. Lawrence University students in the class "Environmental Perception and Indigenous Knowledge" presented posters to the community at the St. Regis Mohawk School. For the second year, employees of the Tarbell Management Group took their own money and purchased Christmas gifts for children involved in the SRMT Division of Social Services. This year, 139 presents were bought. Each participating employee picked the age and gender of a child and bought them a gift. On Friday, the Winter Ballroom at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort was filled with over 250 seniors for the Association of Senior Citizens and Office of the Aging of Franklin County Christmas Party. The Planning, Construction and Public Works department of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe participated in Movember, a no-shave policy meant to raise awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of getting checked. Friday December 6th was Canada-wide Jump Rope for Heart day and the Kanatakon School has been participating for almost 10 years. All day students filed in and out of the gym to get active for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The kids have been collecting pledges and on Friday they certainly earned them. Sweets Jacobs and Allyson Lamesse from Community Health came in and spoke to the kids about exercising and eating healthy and gave the kids a much-needed healthy snack after all that jumping....
On Monday, the Kanatakon School held a Hand-Balancing/Movement Workshop for the 5/6 grade transition class. Yuri Marmerstein taught the class. On Saturday, the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group set up sewing machines in the Seniors Center to make hats for cancer patients who have lost their hair. Martin's of Moira Country Store was packed with people on Friday and Saturday for their 10th anniversary celebration. Martin's is a family owned and operated business. The Country Store carries just about anything you could need, from food to hardware, and housewares to animal feed, and many locally made products. Last Wednesday night, the Kanatakon School was the site for the Kids Comic-Con put on by Akwesasne Child and Family Services. The gym was filled with characters as 22 ACFS staff were in costume. On Thursday night, the Middle School gym at Salmon River was home to the STEM Greek Fest. There were several vendors selling goodies and lots of student display booths themed around ancient Greece.
