The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne hosted a temporary relocation ceremony on May 1, 2014, the 115th year anniversary of his passing, for the statue of John Saiowisakeron Fire. The event was held in front of the Angus Mitchell Memorial Building in the village of Kana:takon, which is directly across the road from Saiowisakeron's original homestead. On Saturday, the Akwesasne Youth Leadership (AYL) in conjunction with Kanenhi:io Ionkwaiontonhakie held a Youth Planting Workshop. At least a dozen kids took part. They learned planting methods, how to start and save seeds, the benefits of organic growing, companion planting, composting, medicine plants and did a variety of hands-on activities like making corn mush, planting seeds and building a simple trellis. On Saturday morning the Seniors Center in Hogansburg was the site for the annual Earth Day Celebration and Seed Giveaway hosted by the Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment. Every Tuesday night the St. Regis Mohawk School hosts martial arts classes. Sensei Joe Colarusso, Proprietor and Senior Instructor of He Yee Dao Karate Association, has been instructing classes for about three years at the school. As long as there is school, he will be there. From 6pm to 7pm Joe holds class for kids from about ages six to 12. At 7pm he teaches a teen and adult class. The Three Sisters program hosted an Internet Safety Seminar last Thursday night at the Seniors Center. They invited Special Agent Timothy Losito from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to do his presentation on internet safety and cyber bullying. Last Thursday, the Kanatakon School held its Annual Language Show. The gym was decorated for the event, complete with a beautiful stage. Each grade put on a performance; singing songs, dancing and acting out skits. The Headstart kicked the show off singing "Na'taronni." Then the K-4 sang "Kana'tarakhonwe tanon Takwaashon." On Tuesday, the Akwesasne Mini Mart celebrated its one year anniversary. They had tons of specials and giveaways. Since Lynn Thompson, Gordon Delorimiere and Angela Thompson opened the doors of the Akwesasne Mini Mart, it has grown a lot. They now make subs to order, and have sandwiches and salads already made. The Brass Horse was decked out in Disney on Friday night for the Music 4 Miracles Trivia Fundraiser. It's the organizations biggest event, which included a huge Mohawk auction, and all sorts of Disney characters filled the tables. Last Thursday at the Kanatakon School Leona Lafrance's 5/6 grade transition class put on a play. They performed an adaptation of the 1940's story "Caps for Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina. Ten participants dedicated their Saturday morning to the very detail-oriented and patience-demanding project of fan making.
