Last Friday night the Massena Red Raider basketball squad was on the road and steadily built a 31-19 halftime lead over Gouverneur. The Raiders stepped up their intensity as they outscored the Wildcats 25-11 in the third en route to a 70-44 victory. The SRCS boy’s varsity basketball team opened its regular season with a loss to the Canton Golden Bears, 38-65 at home. The Golden Bears burst out of the locker room and jumped out to an early 20-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Two Akwesasne female athletes were recently named to the New York State All State Volleyball teams. Massena Central student, Janisa Benedict, was named to the third team while Salmon River Central student, Nicole Smoke, was named to the fourth team. Samantha Phillips has taken over the reins from Jim Barnes and is the new head coach for the Lady Shamrocks. The SRCS Mohawk Club members shared their culture with their classmates on Native American Day, which they celebrated on Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Middle school students took part in the activities in the morning while the high school celebrated in the afternoon. The SRCS 2012 swim season came to an end last Saturday at the Section 10 Swim Sectionals at Maxcy Hall, SUNY Potsdam. The atmosphere was electrifying and loud as nine teams competed in eleven events, in hopes of being crowned Section 10 Champs. Canton Central high school took top honors with a score of 326. The 2012 Section 10 Cross Country Championship was hosted by Gouverneur at the Gouverneur Country Club last Thursday. The Potsdam girls captured the Class C title with Madi Dow leading the Sandstoners. Caroline Russell was the lone runner for the Shamrocks and came in ninth place with a time of 26:41.40.
