Salmon River rallies to tie Massena 1-1 The Salmon River High School boys hockey team skated to a 1-1 overtime tie with rival Massena at the Tom Cavanaugh Arena on January 18. The Shamrocks trailed Massena going into the third period but refused to lose. Roger Mitchell sings a song that he wrote for his brother Russell "Hoss" Mitchell about ten years ago, called 'Flying High' while his sister Becky cuts a birthday cake made for Russell, since it is his day of birth. It looks like a big birthday celebration, but it was a night to lay Russell, who died ten years ago, to rest while raising funds for the AMBE hot lunch program. The week of January 9-14 was a week of bitter losses and sweet wins for the Salmon River winter teams. Another successful community workshop at the Akwesasne Cultural Museum took place on Mondays and Thursdays from November 28-December 22. Local artist, Denise Jock led a fancy basket making class where nine people participated. Many of the participants were able to weave at least two baskets, some made more. Mrs. Jock has been making baskets for 43 years and learned the talent from her mother, Sarah Thompson Jocko. "I started masking baskets when I was twenty years old", explained Mrs. Thompson....

The legend of the Black Ash Baskets says that Black Elk was concerned for his people and when he died he wanted to leave them something that would not only help them provide for their families, but also teach them patience. Local artist, Richard David, taught eight people how to make utility baskets during eight classes over the month of November at the Akwesasne Museum. The Akwesasne Tourism Working Group was given a $10,000 award by the Citizens Institute on Rural Design (CIRD) to come up with ideas to incorporate Mohawk language and culture into designing our roadways, signage, landscape and buildings. Dominating performances week after week earned the Salmon River Boys Varsity Cross Country team a Section 10 Class C Championship title at Sectionals at Norwood-Norfolk. Salmon River booters outlast the Wildcats The last home game for the boys' varsity soccer team ended the way they hoped it would; a 4-2 win over Gouverneur(2-13,1-11). About 100 people had smiles lighting up their faces on Friday night, October 14, but that wasn't all. They also had a number of glow sticks wrapped around their neck, wrists and heads to light their way during the third annual Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club Glow walk at Generations Park.
