On March 19 and 20, several committed community members met at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Community Building for a series of training classes for certification in CPR/AED. On March 19 and 20, over 30 general contractors of various trades met at the Senior’s Center in Hogansburg for an Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) scaffolding safety training course hosted by Ironworkers local 440. On March 20, the Akwesasne Minor Hockey IP program ended their 2009-2010 season with an end of the year family skate at the A’nowara’kowa Arena. Coaches Tony Benedict, Kody Thompson, Curry Rice and Josh Jacobs were on hand to give out awards, cook hotdogs and serve up an incredible lunch for the IP team and supporters. The Beginning with Books Program is an interactive reading hour designed to foster a love of books among infants and children up to age 4 though stories, crafts and other fun activities. Basket making is a long time tradition in Haudenosaunee culture and the Akwesasne Cultural Center upholds that tradition by holding basket-making classes. Classes are offered as part of community outreach and education. The class is 6 weeks long and it began on Mar. 1. The Salmon River Shamrocks Girls Hockey held their end of the year banquet at the Brass Horse Banquet Hall on Mar. 4. The girls, who were disappointed they did not make State Champs this year, ended their 2009-2010 season in eleventh place overall with a record 4-8. On Feb. 12, some senior artists displayed their original paintings in the sun room at the Seniors Center in Hogansburg. All pieces were created by seniors who have been participating in monthly art classes taught by Sherly Barse from Brushton.
