The Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department held their third annual boot drive fundraiser on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) on Oct. 12 during the Thanksgiving/Columbus Day holiday. On Oct. 6, St. Regis Mohawk School students were bused in to the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department Station 1 to take part in “Fire Safety Education”. The Akwesasne Freedom School’s 28 Annual Dinner and Quilt Auction was held this past weekend Sept. 26-27. The event was organized by parents and teachers of the school in order to raise funds for general expenses needed to run the school, such as: supplies and salaries for teachers and staff. “It helps support language and community” said an anonymous parent. The Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge is coming to Akwesasne. MCA’s Community Health Program, with funding from Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative, developed their own version of the hit TV show calling it The 3 Districts “Biggest Loser” Challenge.
