A Midnight Pajama Volleyball Tournament was held during the winter carnival, hosted by Akwesasne Soaring Eagles at the Kana:takon School on Feb. 13. The event was coordinated by Clarissa Jacobs. The idea was to just have fun and be comfortable. 4 pajama-clad teams participated. They were: Dream Team, Sleeping Beauties, Sleeping Hags, and Team Sh-nye. Thomas “TJ” Bero of Akwesasne is an incredible 5-year-old boy who was born with a severe heart condition and has been through 2 operations already. Last year, they came across an extreme complication while attempting to fix his heart valve. Because of the risk of colds due to his condition TJ stays home and is currently home schooled. On Jan. 29 Brass Horse Bar and Grille held a fish fry lunch and benefit dance to help those who were devastated by the earthquake that took place on the island nation of Haiti on Jan. 12. Staff members volunteered their time to come in and prepare the $10 lunches which began selling at 11 am. The Mohawk people have had a long legacy with ironworking that is still a large and integral part of the community and its identity. Mohawk ironworkers were fearless- often seen scaling beams without harnesses. This past Feb. 4, the team got together and held a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to help cover the cost of the team’s sneakers and warm-ups, a 2500.00 expense. Hunter’s Hope was created by Hunter Cook’s aunts Karen Adams and Randa Martin when young Hunter became sick last year and needed a double lung transplant. Their campaign to raise money for his family’s traveling expenses back and forth from the hospital in Boston included dances, in-door lawn sales, golf tournaments, and donation jars in locations across Akwesasne.
