The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation program first began hosting the annual Disability Awareness Day as a way to bring awareness to the available Tribal Programs. This group located in Oneida, Ontario – an Oneida settlement just outside of London – worked together to plant and then harvest a tobacco crop that could then be used as an Oneida tobacco blend to be sold or traded. The Mohawk Bingo Palace took up a collection of school supplies this year, donating over 1,000 pieces to the St. Regis Mohawk School. The collection of supplies took place over the course of a two-month period from July 1-September 1, 2011 with patrons from the Palace. The Akwesasne Freedom School Survival Race was an extreme test of endurance for the five participating teams. The race took place on Saturday morning starting at 9:00am in Raquette Point with the swimmers being brought out into the middle of the river and having to swim the long distance to shore. Tragedy has struck again on the St. Lawrence River over the weekend as a boating accident resulted in one fatality. The accident occurred on the waterway in front of Loran’s Marina in the main shipping channel. Eyewitness reports have indicated that two men who were operating a small watercraft hit large waves created by a passing yacht. It is a mere two days away from the 2011 Annual Dinner and Quilt Auction, which will take place this weekend at the Akwesasne Freedom School in Raquette Point on Saturday and Sunday.
