The unofficial results are in and Ronald Lafrance Jr. pulled ahead in the race to represent the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal electoral as the next Tribal Chief. A total of 786 votes were cast in the 2011 Tribal election with Lafrance garnering a majority of 392 votes with 380 votes the day of the election and 12 absentee ballots. Barbara Lazore received a total of 217 votes, 202 were made the day of the election with 15 absentee ballots. The Annual Memorial Day Parade was held this past Sunday afternoon along Route 37. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe held a public meeting on Thursday, May 19 to discuss the ongoing battle with New York State over the collection of tax from sales made to non-members on cigarette purchases. The Salmon River Central Athletic Hall of Fame held its 2011 induction ceremony this past weekend. Hundreds of people packed the Brass Horse Banquet Hall for the event celebrating Shamrock athletics. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Election Board reviewed two appeals that were filed against the results of the April 30 referendum on the question, “Do you support the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s expansion project at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino?” According to a release from the election board, after careful review, they determined that there were not sufficient grounds to constitute an invalid referendum. The Akwesasne Freedom School students, parents, teachers and friends turned out this past Saturday morning to a breakfast fundraiser. With maple syrup being made by the older grades at the school this past spring, community members were greeted to the wonderful aromas of pancakes with other assorted breakfast items. The money raised from this event was to be split between the AFS and the Faithkeepers fund, which helps to maintain the cookhouse and Mohawk Nation Longhouse.
