We are privileged to live in a time and place without war. Unless you make a conscious decision to enlist, we can live a lifetime without ever hearing a gunshot intended to take a life, a cannon or bomb intended to demolish its target, or to be ambushed in the dark. Think for moment what it would be like if you lived in the 1800's. War was all around. The Haudenosaunee Nations, the communities, the families, all were touched by war. Every man, woman and child was affected by the drama and...
I ran into my niece at the post office, she was driving her small, used and rusting car. She was so excited about being accepted at a local university and looking forward to starting classes in the fall. She said she was getting everything in place to commute and that meant looking for a more reliable vehicle. Unfortunately what was setting her back temporarily was her credit score. Like many young people her age, their credit score isn’t high enough to take them to the next level – a new vehicle, a college loan, home improvement on a fix...

Summer is here and after our long winter – we all want to be OUTSIDE! With the rising numbers of people getting skin cancer it is better to take precautions than end up with potentially harmful sunburn. While most of us walk outdoors with darker, protective skin, ultraviolet rays are stronger than they used to be. If you are thinking of buying the most expensive, highest rating SPF (sun protection factor) beware, most studies have shown that sunscreens do not actually contain the amount of SPF protection as promoted and listed on the container...

Tara Tarbell has faced adversity. When staring at a very uncertain future and the biggest medical challenge a person can face in a lifetime, she took this experience and its myriad of emotions and chose to walk the path of being positive. She refocused her attitude from feeling bad and upset and redirected her attention to the positive things in her life. Soon after, she realized she had the time and focus to finally develop the skin care line she had been thinking of since her teen years. Ever...

Remember the saying, "I found her/him on the side of the road?" On Saturday, May 3, 2014 you could find many on the side of the road cleaning the garbage that had been tossed out of vehicles. The garbage was collected on the roadside by people who care enough about Akwesasne. They care enough to throw their garbage in a proper container, they care enough to bring their children and grandchildren along, teaching them to be responsible and caring. They care enough to spend three hours of their...
I am sure every has heard the expression once, if not a hundred times, “it was a long and cold winter”. With truth to every bit of that expression we can finally start enjoying warm weather activities. It may be a bit too cold to take a swim but just think of how glorious it is to take a walk in the woods, fly a kite in the fields, or take a hike in the mountains. Just think – the sun shining down on you, beautiful scenery all around, clean crisp mountain air and your family and friends by your side. What could be better? Being prepared is wh...

It is estimated that cancer affects at least one in every three families in Akwesasne. So if you stood on your front steps and looked down the road at your neighbors, you could find someone who has cancer, had cancer or died from cancer. If it affects one person in Akwesasne, it affects everyone in Akwesasne. The Akwesasne Cancer Support Group started six years ago when a group of cancer survivors and their family were in the midst of their fight against this same disease. They formed a strong...

Tampico. Tampico is a city in Mexico with a population of over two million people, and Tampico is an authentic Mexican restaurant that just opened last August located in Cornwall. If all of this seems coincidence it isn't. Tampico is the creation of Ivan Contreas, originally from Tampico, Mexico. When Contreas emigrated from Mexico he moved to Montreal. He was invited to visit Cornwall with friends and that was when he saw an opportunity. There are only a small handful of restaurants with true...
In the first match of the season, the Cornwall Power Dames won at 262 to the Kahnawake Wagon Burners 105. With the revival of an 80's and 90's staple of entertainment, roller derby has since seen a national resurgence of newly formed teams and leagues across the United States and Canada. Most teams and leagues are DIY, a do-it-yourself team formed by the sheer need to give a hit and take a hit. The Cornwall Power Dames are a not-for-profit team where teammates take turns running the scoreboard,...

Just think. Think of all of the crazy things we do and say in one day, all of the crazy things we see and all of the crazy things that happen to us because we are Onkwehonwe. Yea, that's The 1491's, a group of guys who take our daily life and mix it with laughing gas and tear gas and then give it back to us to leave us rolling in the aisle and wiping our tears from laughing so hard. It's a funny hard look at how we are perceived by non-Natives. And we can all relate to each video and every...
