DON’T RELY ON A SINGLE SITE: When checking booking sites, make sure you check a few to get the best deals, especially if you will be traveling out of the country. For international flights, check both the airline you want to fly and any U.S.-based codeshare airlines. For example, when flying from Montreal to Paris, check Air France and Air Canada. You’ll be booked on the same flight but one airline may offer a fare for less. HOUSE SWAP: You stay in my house, and I stay in yours. You pay an annual membership fee, which generally adds up to les...

The Akwesasne Museum once again hosted a Wampum Discussion evening on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. The meeting was held upstairs in the library and was attended by 6 people. The Discussion isn’t lead by any one person, nor do they have a “main” or “guest speaker.” Instead the evening is what the initial intent of the wampum and our entire historical and sociological presence is based on – an oratory of each individual’s account or relation they have with their understanding of what “wampum” is and what “wampum” means to them. It was a very r...

Continued from last week… 6. THINK ABOUT SWITCHING TO SNOW TIRES. Then you might want to improve traction even more by investing in winter tires and using them over the next few months instead of your usual all-season tires. When shopping around for snow tires, ask about all the fees that might come into play, such as fees for mounting and balancing. You can accomplish this easily and make accurate cost comparisons by asking each store for the “out the door charge.” Good snow tires make an incredible difference on a snowy road, but keep in mi...
Ryan Hill, originally from Six Nations, now living in Akwesasne, recently won the Saratoga Springs Native American Festival Art Contest with his soapstone carving entitled “Passing on the Tradition.” Ryan could be seen working in front of the local business “Mohawk Printing” located on Route 37 not far from the Akwesasne Library. During the past summer months, you could often see Ryan transform a solid piece of soapstone into a masterful piece of artwork over a span of several weeks. The bea...

It’s that glorious autumn season once again, and with it comes spectacular fall foliage, toasty warm sweaters, crisp fall evenings, plenty of hot tea and APPLES. And in this North Country region we have an abundance of apples. The Macintosh apple was developed right here in southern Ontario. There are plenty of apples to choose from your local farmers market to the grocery store. Unless you are making applesauce or apple butter where a few bruises will not make any difference, choose firm ripe apples for the most flavor. I have included 3 a...
The Tuscarora started a very unique program on October 1, 2012. Tuscarorans will have the opportunity to “move” alongside those walking, running, hiking, biking, and canoeing on the 900 mile Migration Project. To commemorate this date, a Wampum Discussion Group was held at the Akwesasne Library Museum which houses the Wolf Belt. The Wolf Belt was constructed around 200 hundred years ago to commemorate a time when unity was needed to overcome the pressure of colonization. The resilience of the Mohawk people is evident in our ability to survive over the past few centuries. When we look back on our history we can...
THE BATHROOM Most cleaners for the bathroom can be deadly. Someone always had a story of near death by overuse of one single product in an attempt to clean the toilet bowl. Here are some far-less toxic ways to clean the dreaded toilet bowl. TOILET BOWL CLEANERS Combine ¼ cup of white distilled vinegar and 2 cups of water in a labeled spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial toilet bowl cleaner. For stubborn stains, spray the solution and leave it on to soak for 15 minutes. Swish with a toilet brush. Pour a cup of white vinegar into the...

There are many ready-made products that you can find in a health food store in the organic section. Read each label carefully. Check for...

3. SELL USED BOOKS I have a friend that sells used books from home. She was kind enough to share some ideas on how to get started and tips to do well. She explained that she buys used books from garage and estate sales, and then turns around and sells the books for cash on sites like Amazon, Ebay, Half.com and AbeBooks. She uses the scanner to determine how long it usually takes for a specific book to sell and how much it sells for. She told me that she makes a full-time living doing this. So, I got the scoop on how to run a business of this...
Call Centers: Sell Your Time and Voice If you have a great telephone voice, an ability to organize information quickly, and a quiet place in your home to work, you could make money working for a call center. What is it exactly? Call centers cater to businesses that don’t have someone to answer their phones 24 hours a day. The calls are routed to a call center, and then sent out to individuals who work from their homes. These workers are equipped with computers and software to be able to answer customers’ questions. The average pay for the...

No matter what kind of clothes the child will wear of the first day of school, a child who receives a backpack from Mohawk Vision and...
Making less of an environmental impact while saving money getting ready for back to school sounds like an amazing idea. But how do the two go together? Getting ready for back to school can add up. There are new jeans, new shirts, new T-shirts, new sweaters, new socks, new shoes, the list seems endless at this time of year. Not to mention book bags, knapsacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, yes it is that time of year once again. But in terms of cost and environmental impact the biggest item is clothes, so that is the place to start to make your...
