Are you into beading, wearing high quality beadwork, looking for a creative outlet for your children, or concerned about losing our traditional and cultural crafts? Well the Kawenoke Recreation Center was the place to be on Saturday, March 29, 2014 for the First Akwesasne's Beader's Showcase. Some of Akwesasne's best and most creative beaders were there to "Showcase" their designs and artistry. Tables were set up as they are for craft sales, but this had more of the air of an art show and some...
The single goal of the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment is to provide the youth of Akwesasne alcohol and drug free events, and for 30 young girls ages 8 to 13, the Coalition outdid themselves. The Girls Night Out has been providing young girls of Akwesasne an evening full of fun and important information to help them navigate today's pressure filled days at school, at their friends and sometimes even at home, for at least 20 years. This year Coalition members reminisced with their...

I’ve written a few articles on saving money while on vacation and here are a few more ideas. With that said, going on vacation doesn’t have to break your bank or blow your budget for months to come. The key to saving money and staying within a budget on your vacation is to “HAVE A PLAN”, a plan to have fun and to stay within budget. So you and your family won’t look like the Griswalds in a recession, here are some not so obvious ways to save money on your Spring Break vacation. Be flexible with your flights. When booking online try being fle...
Amie Barnes, Executive Director, announced the Seven Dancers Coalition (formerly Haudenosaunee Coalition for Women's Empowerment) recently received $369,000 grant from the Office of Violence Against Women. This grant will allow the Seven Dancers Coalition to serve a larger population of Native American victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault throughout Native American Communities within New York State. Their first year was spent building awareness of violence against Native women and...
There are some things to take into consideration before you spend the money from the Tax Class Action Suit. For one, this money is extra money, it is money you never expected to get, didn’t really work for and never really thought about until you received a notice in mail to reply to it. It is by all accounts free money. We didn’t work for it, we didn’t file the suit for it, we didn’t hire the lawyer for it, and so with all due respect, we shouldn’t complain about it. Receiving extra money should put you ahead, or at least leave you in the sa...
5. Musical Equipment Things like amps, guitars, and recording equipment can run into the hundreds and even thousands brand-new. A decent microphone alone can go for several hundred. Any musician trying to live within his means, which is any musician struggling and rarely succeeding, still has to find some way to produce music. On EBay, Craigslist, and used retailers like Daddy’s Junkie Music (not to mention garage sales), you are sure to find viable and completely decent merchandise to make you at least a practicing musician. If you need a micr...
A couple of weeks ago, I gave you a list of things you should not buy used. Well this week, here is your list of things you should buy “Used”! 10. Clothes It’s utter insanity to buy clothes modeled on vintage styles brand-new and at premium prices. The best possible anecdote is teenagers paying $70 for hand-ripped jeans at American Eagle, when natural wear and tear (and perhaps a job in construction) could do the same thing for free. Authenticity would declare a thrift store or vintage clothing retailer your best source of styles that come stra...

Ryan Hill, a local artist originally from Six Nations, participated in his second Ice Carving Contest as part of Ottawa's Winterlude 2014. The Winterlude Carnival runs from January 31, 2014 to February 17, 2014 – so there's still time to catch various events that suit everyone's taste. Spirit FC held an evening filled with anticipation, excitement and "caring." Caring; in the form of donating a portion of the proceeds of the fight to Ieweras Gray, a 15 year old who has been battling cancer for years. In most cases it's the everyday person who looks to the athlete with the big name for inspiration. This time, it was the local big name athlete who was inspired by a "real fighter." When Brett Hart, Akwesasne's Featherweight Title champion, met Ieweras Gray he knew she was the rea...
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and by the time this is published, guys and gals – you’ll have 8 days to come up with a gift that has meaning and shows you care. Buying a diamond (or diamonds) is great if you have the money, but you don’t have to break the bank and ruin your budget to show someone you love that you are grateful that he/she is in your life. And for single people - don’t make Valentine’s Day a day for “couples” only. Show your friends, your Auntie’s, or that all important person in the world who showered you with...
Ieweras Gray is a fighter, a fighter who is stronger than most of the young men participating in a Benefit MMA fight on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the St. Lawrence Centre Arena. Gray has been battling Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) since the age of 5. ALL is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In the past year, after numerous treatments and hospital stays her cancer returned in the form of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) affecting the red and white blood cells as they mature and grow....

This award has been presented annually for the past 8 years to a loyal and dedicated fan of the Salmon River Central School Hockey Team. The deserving fan faithfully cheers on the Salmon River hockey players with a display of good sportsmanship and is known for being there for the team. Timmy Rourke is just 13 years old but that doesn't stop him from attending virtually every SRCS hocke...
2. Swimsuits Buying a swimsuit is about as much fun and demoralizing as buying jeans. So without trying on a hundred of them I can’t imagine wearing someone else’s swimsuit. Think about it - swimsuits hug the body. The close contact can transmit bacteria and other diseases – which may transfer to you when you wear the suit (FYI – you CANNOT get AIDS from a used swimsuit). Swimsuits are also fragile. If the washing instructions aren’t followed, the straps might rip or the swimsuit might lose its shape. So you could be buying something that may...
Once again the Akwesasne Basket Drive and Mountain of Toys had another successful year, with Sarah Konwahahawi Herne being the new director. Fundraising including a breakfast and lunch served by the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and community members were bailed out of a “jail” with donations from friends and family. “Elvis” TJ Jackson entertained the crowd while a silent auction was held. Baskets of food, a $20 gift card and a toy for each child were distributed by Dec. 18th. What It Takes Just what does it take to provide community members with a...
Continued from last week 11. Personalized Calendars. You can buy calendar blanks or use a template from a program; add pictures of things or people meaningful to the recipient; add in important dates (birthdays and anniversaries of family & friends); and maybe a special note or quote every once in a while. For parents/students you can add in the school schedule; for homeowners you can add in a home maintenance schedule; etc. for sports fans, astrology followers, on & on. To make them extra special I sometimes add little treats – a couple d...
The Akwesasne Housing Authority recently held a Home Maintenance Clinic on Thursday, December 12, 2013. The Clinic had a variety of presenters there to show how to do simple repairs in your home and to answer any questions about repairs to your home. They stressed how important it is to tend to those simple repairs before they turn into major repairs with contractors, special tools and materials. On hand to help with all your home repairs were MCA's Healthy Homes Initiative, SRMT Environment's...
Are you running out of ideas or just tired of the craziness of shopping for gifts they won’t use or remember. Here is a list of ideas for gifts that could become cherished forever, at least make someone smile for your effort. 1. Homemade Truffles. (A soft chocolate center with a choice of outer shell) Truffles are very easy to make and you can cover them with different kinds of crushed nuts and such. You can buy blank little white boxes and decorate them with just some wrapping paper (glued) and ribbon. This is an easy gift to make for under $...
