On Sunday, December 11th, Tsi:Snaihne Recreation hosted their annual Gingerbread House making event. The room was all decorated for Christmas and everyone was in the holiday spirit. On Monday, December 5th, members of Akwesasne gathered at Generations Park to rally in celebration after the announcement from the Army Corps of Engineers that they disapproved of the location of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Originally this event was scheduled as a protest, however there was a change of plans after this news was announced. This past weekend, Kawehnoke Recreation hosted their Spirit of Christmas event. This year they had around thirty Christmas trees and wreaths donated by the community for this event. This event was a fundraiser for the Kawehnoke Recreation center, so they can continue to hold events year round for the benefit of the community. John Thomas, a member of the Akwesasne community, was commissioned by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and OPG to paint a mural at the OPG Visitors Centre in Cornwall, Ontario. They wanted something to be created that illustrated the St. Lawrence River before the dam was built. The Elders Benefit committee has been meeting for years now to discuss a possible elder’s monthly allowance. This allowance would be given to community members within a 15-mile radius who are over the age of 62. The amount would be around $200 a month (given in a form subject to debate), that elders could use to aid in their day-to-day expenses. This committee’s proposal was rejected, which then sparked the idea for a petition. Over the course of the last few weeks, the St. Regis Mohawk School and Salmon River Central School have been holding various events to celebrate their annual Native American Day tradition. The first events were in the Salmon River Elementary, where they had a social dance hosted by the Native North American Traveling College, and a story telling by Perry Ground from Onondaga. On Friday, November 18th, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne had the grand opening of the Tsi:Snaihne Walking Trail. The project came into action earlier this fall, and has been worked on over the course of the last few months. Living its first 25 years as the Roxy Theater before becoming what it is known as today, the Port Theater, is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The Roxy Theater of Cornwall opened on December 26th, 1941 and was one of nine theaters to open from Hamilton to the Quebec border. This year a grant was received from New Horizons and the province of Ontario to set up an event that provided information regarding elder abuse. Booths were set up that included a variety of information and resources about elderly abuse, how to prevent it, and the necessary steps to take if you or someone you know are experiencing abuse. Last weekend Tsi Snaihne Recreation held their annual Christmas Enchantment event. This four day event began on November 10th with a meal for the Elders in the community. They were served corn soup and biscuits, and afterward they were able to preview the decorative trees. On Sunday November 13th, Project Good Mind hosted a 5K Walk/Run at Generations Park, Tewatahita Walking Trail to include the community in National Native Youth Health and Wellness Day. This day of celebration includes ten thousand youth across the country and involves around one hundred communities. Last Monday was the annual St. Regis Village wide Halloween event. The streets were flooded with members of the Akwesasne community of all ages dressed in costumes to celebrate the holiday. There were tents giving out candy and goodies all lining the streets, that kids could trick or treat at. Michael David, a resident of Tsi Snaihne, has had a passion for gardening all his life. This year he was caught by surprise when he harvested his potato crop to find they had grown as large as nine inches in length. He planted the potatoes in about the middle of May earlier this year, and just harvested them within the last couple weeks. He said he owes this remarkable growth to the compost he has. Despite the first snowfall of the season, Akwesasne Child and Family Services (ACFS) held a walk for Child Abuse Awareness last Thursday, October 27. Due to the weather the event was moved to the Travis Solomon Memorial Lacrosse Box at Generations Park. Around fifty people came out to walk, all bundled up in layers to keep warm. Last Thursday October 20th, Salmon River Middle School Parent Teacher Organization hosted the first Mental Health and Wellness Fair in the middle school gymnasium. Groups from all over the community came out to volunteer their time and services for this event.
