    Akwesasne – At Saturday’s October 1, 2011 Tribal meeting, Michelle Mitchell, General Counsel, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, announced that the Interior Department’s Bureau of Indian Affairs had issued a letter to the Tribe indicating they were taking into trust a 39-acre parcel of property that includes the Tribe’s Transfer Station. The 39-acre parcel was purchased by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe back in 1999 for $6,500 as part of a Franklin County property tax sale.     On June 16, 2011, a hearing was held before Federal Magistrate George Lowe on whether New York State motions to dismiss the Mohawk Land Claim should be granted. At the heart of the matter is whether the rulings in the City of Sherrill v. Oneida Indian Nation, Cayuga Indian Nation v. Pataki, and Oneida Indian Nation v. county of Oneida apply to the Mohawk land claim. These court rulings set bad precedents for Indian Land Claims across the United States.
