The St. Regis Recreation Dance Club held their annual recital with 'Party in the Park' at the St. Regis Recreation on June 16th, 2017. The 'Party in the Park' began at 6:30pm with Kevin Lazore emceeing the event. The theme was Disney and a little bit of 90's music. The Little Heroes Training Camp & Obstacle Course was held at the Snye Recreation on Friday, June 9, 2017. The event began with the toddlers having a fun race on the tiny tots track. There was something for children of all ages to do at the event. The 2-6 year olds raced on the tiny tots track while the 7-15 year olds raced on the big track. Iohahi:io held an Open House on Thursday June 8th, 2017. Everyone who attended had the opportunity to apply for the upcoming fall courses, which are being offered at Iohahi:io by St. Lawrence College. Some of the upcoming courses are Business Accounting, General Arts & Science-Behavioral Psychology and Energy Systems Engineering Technology. The Let's Get Healthy Program hosted a Women's Health Day at the Diabetes Center for Excellence on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017. May 27th, 2017 was the day that the Akwesasne Veterans Memorial Monument was revealed to the Akwesasne community at Generations Park. It was a beautiful day with many community members in attendance. Some family members came to support their loved ones who are veterans, while others came to honour the veterans who have already passed. On Sunday May 28th, 2017 the annual Memorial Day parade took place in Hogansburg at 12 p.m. sharp. The parade started at Mill Street and went all the way to the American Legion on Route 37. On Monday, June 5th starts National Safe Kids Week and runs until Saturday, June 11th, 2017. This year, the MCA Community Health Program is giving it a spin and notching it up a bit. The 3rd annual C.C.V.S Student Art Exhibition is taking place at the Cornwall Public Library from May 8th through June 8th. Over 200 works of art, which have been created by the students of C.C.V.S have been chosen to be displayed for the duration of the exhibit. The art exhibit is open to the public. On Wednesday, May 10th 2017, a couple community members decided to do something to help out our neighboring Mohawk community, Kanesatake. As, many people know, Kanesatake has been hit with the mass flooding going on in areas throughout Quebec and Ontario. The flooding began in the first week of May, and it slowly got much worse. The 3rd annual Tewa:araton Festival took place on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Anowarakowa Arena. The festival was initially started in Akwesasne when a leather ball was passed onto the NNATC by the Seneca Nation. The leather ball is basically a symbol of the true meaning of lacrosse, and by accepting to take it, you are promising to educate your people on the sport that the Creator passed down to us. The 9th annual Cancer Awareness 5 Mile Walk/Run took place on May 7, 2017, at the Generations Park walking trail. The event started at 9 a.m. and ended around 1 p.m. Although the weather was not the nicest, it did not stop anyone from participating in the walk/run. Some participants had pledge sheets while others just showed up on the day of the event to show their support to a family member, friend or, they themselves who were survivors of cancer. Friday May 5, 2017 was the very first National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls in the United States. The U.S Senate passed a resolution to designate May 5th as the National Day or Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls, from this year forward. The Annual Roadside Cleanup took place once again, with two sign-up stations on both sides of Akwesasne. It was a good feeling to see the community out and taking care of Mother Earth, by cleaning up all the trash that was left behind after the winter thaw. A lot of youth were involved with cleaning up the roads and ditches. On April 25th, the Tsi Snaihne Recreation were the lucky recipients of a large donation made by both the Strong Roots Charitable foundation and by CAA Management. The Strong Roots Charitable Foundation issued a call out for proposals from any community group interested in building a new outdoor sports box. At 5pm, tables were set up for parents and children to see what other activities and sports were available to the community. One table featured The Akwesasne Skating Club.
