  • Doula Training Held at Kawehnoke Recreation

    Throughout this past week, October 16th to 20th, the Aboriginal Midwife Program held a one-week Doula training. The intensive training began Monday October 16th and continued until Friday October 20th. The individuals, who completed the 5-day training, can go further with their training to become a certified doula.     On Wednesday, October 18th a Spooktacular Event took place at the St. Regis Recreation. The event was the first of its kind, with scary stories and arts crafts followed by a Halloween movie. The event was organized by the Chase Committee, who organize free family events for the community.     On October 21st, the Native North American Travelling College held their first Harvestfest. In the past they held a Fallfest, which was more mainstream. This year they decided NNATC wanted to emphasize our cultural ways by doing a Harvestfest and doing activities centered on our traditions.     On October 15th, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne along with Akwesasne Child and Family Services held a fundraiser event at the Tsi Snaihne Recreation on behalf of the Dreams Take Flight Initiative. This is the second year that Akwesasne has been a part of the initiative, which allows 4 children from Akwesasne ages 6 to 11 year old to go on a one-day trip to Disney World.     A group of individuals came together this past weekend and held a donation drive to help out our fellow First Nation Community affected by the recent hurricanes. After the recent Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and surrounding areas, the Tunica Biloxi Tribe put a call out to Indian Country for aid after they had been impacted by the devastating hurricane. The weekend turned out to be a warm and beautiful one, with many coming out to enjoy the event. This year the powwow also provided free shuttles for folks to get picked up in Cornwall.
