On Wednesday May 8, at 6 pm at the Tri-District Elders Center, a community meeting was held to discuss the latest draft of the Mohawks of Akwesasne Community Settlement Trust document. It was decided through community consultation, that a Community Trust Fund was needed to handle past, present and future settlement monies that are coming into Akwesasne. Alley Bero is back in Akwesasne after an exciting experience in Germany. Bero left around the beginning of October 2012 to play hockey with the SC Garmisch-Partenkirchen Frauen-Eishockey club in Munich. Her first day in Munich, Bero was able to attend Oktoberfest, which she said was “a good way to start off my stay in Germany.” Bero stayed with a teammate who along with her family and the town they were in, all spoke English well, which made her transition a lot easier. The Aimmo Archery Club, a passion project of Bennett King, is beginning to take registrations at the St. Regis Recreation center this Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 5-7pm. It has been a little while in the making, but they are ready to get shooting! There will be no archery taking place at this event, but there will be information available. Wednesday at Akwesasne Mohawk School, children in grades 1-8 participated in a public speaking event. The event is rooted in the Kanienkahaka tradition of oral language, and has been going on for at least 15 years. On Saturday, Swamp’s Performance held the Cruising for Kids event at Jacobs Manufacturing, across from the Mohawk International Raceway. The event, which sponsored the Akwesasne Freedom School and the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club, included a car show and free safety inspections. Donations were accepted, and both the proceeds from the car show’s $6 entry fee and a Chicken BBQ, were donated to each program. On Friday April 26th, a dinner was held at the St. Regis Recreation Center to raise awareness for Victims of Crime week. The event had speakers from organizations within the community, all of whom were part of the various teams here who offer services to victims of crime in Akwesasne. Michelle Smoke of the Akwesasne Community Justice Program wrote a grant that secured $3000 for activities during National Victims of Crime Awareness Week. Teacher Angel Brant is a hero and thanks to her quick thinking and training, a simple food mishap did not become more severe. A student in Mrs. Barnes class was eating his fruit rollup that was packed in his lunch, and wadded the whole snack into his mouth. Unfortunately the snack does not dissolve quickly and the student soon lapsed into a full choke. On Friday, a social benefiting Sarahlee Skidders was held at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. Skidders is currently raising money to pay for stem cell treatments. After having undergone one round already, she saw improvement. The next round will be much longer, but comes at a great expense. Skidders is holding several benefits all over the community and this was done for her on behalf of the community, and the Akwesasne Women Singing Society. Over the weekend, the Quilt of Belonging was on display at NavCan in Cornwall. The quilt, which was a giant undertaking, was the product of a huge volunteer effort. The quilt represents all 263 nations represented within Canada and spans 120 feet. On Saturday, the Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment held their annual seed and tree give away at the Generations Park pavilion. The event, which ran until around 1pm, gave out garden seeds and trees for the community. Community members could come down and sign up and once they had done this, pick out what they needed for gardening or trees for their yard. On Monday night, at the Best Western in Cornwall, there was a benefit dinner held to raise money for the Children’s Treatment Center. The center, which serves people from Akwesasne, Cornwall and the SD & G area, is a completely donation driven treatment center which is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse in the area. On Saturday, March 30, the St. Regis Recreation Center held an Easter egg hunt. Those who attended numbered nearly 200 as estimated by the organizers of the event, the Akwesasne Attack Girls Lacrosse Team. Over the weekend, the Seaway Valley Rapids, a minor bantam team from Cornwall, hosted the KIK team from Sweden. KIK stands for Kunulv Hockey Club, a town north of Gothenburg, and their jerseys have a fortress on it, which has stood since the 14th century. On Sunday, scores of families took to the lawn outside of the Snye Recreation Center to hunt for Easter eggs. The children came in and registered for door prizes, and then everyone headed outside at 2 and went and collected as many brightly colored Easter eggs on the snow as they could find. On Friday, Steven Kellogg, prolific author and illustrator of more than 110 books, gave a presentation for the students at the St. Regis Mohawk School. Kellogg presented to each of the grades, using two pads of paper he would draw out a story. Children were shown hand signals that they must obey from the driver, how to cross the road and get back to their homes safely.
