    On Tuesday, the St. Regis Mohawk School remembered teacher and friend, Grenda Chapin. Chapin succumbed to cancer over spring break, and it was evident by her memorial that she will be dearly missed. Beginning with SRMS Principal Thomas introducing the ceremony, Justin Hahn and Warren Potter sang hymns in tribute to Chapin.     On Monday, June 10, Akwesasne Mohawk Board of Education held a Parent Appreciation Night at the Kanatakon School. The evening’s event was a way to spotlight the accomplishments of the district, the children, and also to really express appreciation for the efforts of parents.     By Ian Oakes On Monday, the 2013 Big Bike Ride to benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada took place at the St. Regis Recreation Center. The Big Bike ride raises funds to put lifesaving defibrillators in public venues and community centers across Canada.     On Thursday, May 30, the Akwesasne Fancy Dancers held a mini-powwow at Generations Park. The event was to give fancy dance class students a chance to strut their stuff. The powwow had youth ages 3-12 participate, all dressed in their regalia and shawls.     Over the weekend, the Girls Got Game Tournament was hosted by the Akwesasne Women Warriors at the Anowara’kowa Arena. The fourth annual tournament is hosted every year here in Akwesasne, and features as many as 7 teams from their league. This year five of the seven teams came down to play, including the newest team, the Kahnawake Ladyhawks.     On Sunday, May 26th, people gathered on the sides of 37 to watch the Annual Memorial Day Parade. The event began with a prayer and casting the wreaths into the St. Regis River. Following that three shots were fired into the air. The parade began at the eastern side of the bridge in Hogansburg and proceeded just past the American Legion.     On Thursday, at the St. Regis Recreation Center a benefit dinner and trivia night was held for Emily Tarbell, who is currently receiving chemotherapy treatments in Valleyfield once a week. She must also travel to Valleyfield for bloodwork on a different day. The benefit is to help offset costs associated with traveling to and from treatment as well as food and other incidentals that occur along the way.     A family who has had a series of hardships over the last year received a huge gift of toys, clothes and a $130 gift card. A club from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York donated all the gifts to the Nielson Family, who have had to move three times, and once into a shelter to escape domestic violence.     On Friday, nearly 500 people gathered to demonstrate their frustration with the border crossing and restrictions which interfere with travel for Akwesasronon.     On Saturday, A co-ed 2x2 Volleyball tournament was held to benefit sending Shaylan and Haylee Jacco to South Africa on June 28, 2013. The Jacco’s are doing a humanitarian program with the Reach Out Volunteer Program over in South Africa. The duration of the project for the girls will be two weeks overseas. The Reach-Out Volunteer program will allow the Jacco’s to interface with the indigenous people of South Africa and participate in wildlife conservation efforts in the area.     This year’s Senior Games took place on Monday, May 13, at the Seniors Center in Hogansburg. The event is held every year “right after Mother’s Day, for around 11 years,” according to Co-Organizer Judy Cole. Elders who attended were treated to snacks and lunch, as well as activities.
