The second annual Tsikionhet Onkwawen:na tanon Tsiniionkwariho:ten youth camp was held on Thompson Island last week, from July 22-26. The event featured workshops led by local agencies aimed at providing the youth with healthy messages and skills. The camp was open to youth ages 14-17. On Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, Cornwall’s NavCenter hosted the Inaugural Canadian Golden Gloves Championship. Boxers, trainers and their families from all over Canada descended on Cornwall to participate in the first event of this kind for Boxing Canada. The Human Rights Tribunal of Fallan Davis V. CBSA continued Friday at Nav Canada Center in Cornwall. Testimony was given by CBSA witnesses and Davis was not present due to continued illness and stress. Proceedings will continue August 26-29. The Tribunal is in response to a complaint made by Davis following a 2005 incident at Cornwall Port of Entry. Davis was selected to have her SUV scanned by a gamma ray imaging machine, and Davis alleges she was treated very poorly. Davis has concerns about the exposure to radiation she endured during the...
On Thursday, July 18, a presentation was held to show the film Flames of War, which is a 45 minute film about the war of 1812. The event began around 8:30 after some warm ups, and it opened up with an exhibition of traditional dancers and singers. On Friday, July 19, friends and family gathered to help Emily Tarbell by holding a benefit lunch and auction for her. The benefit lunch was $5 and included your choice of hamburger or hotdog and sides. In order to raise more funds for Emily, there were at least 45 items donated and they were auctioned off in a Silent Auction. Even though we know it is there, and likely will befall someone we know at some point, often we are still caught off guard by a loved one’s passing. Even more often, the financial burden is the unexpected part of death, and funeral expenses seem to be only climbing. In a ceremony held on Thursday June 27, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School graduated the Class of 2013. Due to the size of the graduating class, the ceremony needed to be split in half, with last names starting with letters A-K at 10 AM, and letters L-Z had their ceremony at 2 PM. On Thursday, June 27, the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment hosted its Super Family Fun Day at Generations Park. There were families all having a blast in a drug and alcohol free environment, which was the aim of the whole event. On June 20, the Bank of Montreal Peace Tree Mall Branch held a barbeque to celebrate 20 years in the community. They served the usual BBQ foods like hamburger, hotdogs, cake and strawberry drink. On Saturday June 22, the Kawehnoke Recreation Center held their annual Family Fun Day at the Anowara’ko:wa Arena. The weather proved to be a problem but when it cleared up, activities got underway. At the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday, an all you can eat pancake breakfast was held benefiting Danielle Terrance in her battle with cancer. Plates were $10 apiece and included the usual breakfast fixings. Danielle is currently battling stage 4 gastro-intestinal peritoneal cancer. On a rainy Sunday, the Bombay Volunteer Fire Department held its annual Field Days on Sunday June 16. There was a chicken barbeque to raise funds priced at $10 a plate. The fire hall was packed with people. There were raffles on items, and drawings for prizes. Even the rain couldn’t deter the community from coming out to support the fire department that serves them. On Thursday, June 6, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service held a situational based training which resembles a ride-along. The situation was two calls, which were staged to represent real crimes that officers see. Due to insurance concerns, students are not allowed to attend real calls, and this situational based training presented the next best thing. On Thursday evening, June 6, at the Akwesasne Cultural Center a fancy basket class taught by Denise Jock wrapped up its final session. Students completed two baskets from start to finish over the course of the classes.
