On Sunday, July 1st, a swearing in ceremony was held behind the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Building with David Staddon acting as Master of Ceremonies. The ceremony was to swear the newly elected Chief Paul Thompson, sub-chief Eric Thompson, and Tribal Clerk Corleen Jackson-Jacco, into office. Tina’s Pride, a group dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer, held a benefit car wash on Saturday, June 30th. Car washes were five dollars and all proceeds went to sponsoring the group’s annual trip to Syracuse to participate in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk – held in Clinton Square on September 30th 2012 at 10 AM. On Friday, June 29th, the Summer Company Program Kickoff was held at the Cornwall Civic Center. This year’s program includes seven businesses, with one from Akwesasne. The event had speakers from several of the local governments, MP Guy Lauzon, and Edge Smoke from the Owista Capital Corporation. On Saturday, July 7th, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne held its swearing in ceremony, during which 13 members of the community were sworn in at the St. Regis Recreation Center. On Tuesday, July 3rd, the Dream Big-READ program was launched for children in Pre-k through 1st grade. Tuesday consisted of an introduction to the Dream Big-READ program, which is a statewide Summer Library Program, which has a nighttime theme this year. Robin Logan, the person teaching the program with the children, chose many books which she felt worked with the theme and that she enjoyed. On Saturday, June 30th, a chicken barbeque was held to benefit the HAVFD. The weather cooperated and it was a gorgeous day to have it. 350 halves of chicken were cooked, and all told they raised 2900$. On Sunday July 1st, the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department drew the winner for their benefit raffle. The grand prize in the drawing was a Cub Cadet Zero Turn 46” lawn mower, a walk behind snowblower, a lawn sweeper, push mower, and weedeater. The Snye Recreation Jr. Golf Tournament took place On Friday, July 6th. The tournament was held at Cedarview golf course, with a luncheon and award ceremony to follow. This will be the 8th year of the program. The format of the tournament was a best ball 9 hole tournament. The Snye Rec Jr. Golf Program serves children ages 7-16, and youths are split up by ages and paired with a teacher. On Friday, a taco sale benefiting the Kanatsiohareke Community was held at the longhouse. On Friday at the Anowara’ko:wa Arena, a tree planting ceremony was held. The trees, three sugar maples, were a gift from Enbridge – a Calgary, Alberta based energy company – signifying the past, present, and future. Brendan White said the trees were given to commemorate the new relationship entered into between the Mohawks of Akwesasne and Enbridge. Friday marked the end of the school year for most of the students in the area, and to celebrate this, the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club held its end of the year party. Jessica Cree Jock explained that every year they celebrate the completion of the school year, and it’s an incentive for the kids. On Friday, June 15th a Father’s Day luncheon was held at the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Center. The meal that was provided consisted of filet mignon wrapped in bacon, veggies, baked potato, and dessert. Over the weekend an Iroquois raised beadwork class, taught by Mary Clause of Tuscarora, was held at the Akwesasne Cultural Center. Students started with a board, which allowed them to practice the basic stitches. The boards were part of the curriculum Clause developed, and after they get the stitches down she shows them how to break down and make patterns of their own. On Saturday, a benefit kickball tournament was held sponsoring the Midget Storm’s Traveling Team at the St. Regis Recreation Hall. It was a beautiful day, a crowd gathered to watch the tournament. In all, 11 teams competed in the tournament each paying an entry fee of 40$ per team. On Monday, Brattleboro, VT based Author/Illustrator John Steven Gurney paid a visit to the St. Regis Mohawk School. Gurney was giving a presentation about the book he wrote, and the roughly 130 he has illustrated. An ice cream social was held at Iakhihsohtha on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and the Kontiwennenhawi Women Singers performed for the residents at Iakhihsohtha. This weeks program spotlight focuses on the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribes Intensive Preventative Program or IPP. IPP focuses on providing supports for at-risk youth and their families who have been referred through the social services department or from the drug court. The program has three major focuses.
