Hometown rockers, Arcane Belief, are possibly up for 6 awards at this year’s Native American Music Awards, which will be held at the Seneca Niagara Hotel & Casino on November 30th. I had a chance to sit down with Arcane Belief’s lead guitarist and band spokesman Lawrence “Buck” Cook in between song breaks at CKON where he is the Night DJ. I have to say it is amazing how fluidly Buck moves from answering a question, to radio announcing, and then back to the question, all seemingly without...
On Thursday, October 4th, amidst crowds of supporters, the Sisters in Spirit Vigil events were held. The event aims to draw attention to the murder of over 600 women in Canada, and showed that now is the time to demand action for our native women. Sister events were held not only in Canada, like the one on Cornwall Island, but also in the United States, and Mexico. The local event, which took place at the crossroads on Cornwall Island, was one of 164 other events across North America, according...
Located on the bottom level at Kanonhkwa’tsheri:io, the Ononhkwa on:we Program is providing traditional medicine and healing services to residents of Akwesasne. Ononhkwa on:we means the original way in Kanienkeha. There are many services that they provide, and it all starts with identifying what ails you. Sometimes it may be physical illness, sometimes it may be emotional, but the key is to identify that you aren’t feeling well and to make an appointment. First you would call Tina and set up an appointment. Once you go in, Alicia Cook giv...
At the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Station on Saturday, September 29th, Det. Sgt. Matt Rourke, in his much “too powerful to be photographed” Montreal Canadian’s hat, waited and accepted unused prescription medications. This “Drug Take Back” was a joint effort of the SRMT Police, the U.S. Attorney’s office and the Plattsburgh DEA office, to raise awareness for the growing prescription drug abuse epidemic. According to the National Institute of Health’s National Institute for Drug Abuse in 20...
On Sunday, while at the fishing derby, I was approached with a story idea. The premise was simple, if there is a world record for four leaf clovers found, and it currently belonged to a 10 year old, it may now belong to St. Regis resident, Laura lee Thompson. Thompson and 3 other people were outside of her sister in law’s store, the Akwesasne Cigarette Depot, and found what they thought to be one, but later turned into 15 four-leaf clovers. Thompson alone found 10 clovers. So we have the p...
Generations of Akwesasronon came out on the dreary morning of Saturday September 29 to partake in the 6th Annual 7 Miles for 7 Generations Walk/Run-a-thon, which took place at the Tewathahita Walking Trail in Hogansburg. Participants collected pledges in the weeks leading up to the event to benefit the Diabetes Center of Excellence Construction Fund, a long awaited dream for all in Akwesasne affected by the disease. The walk/run-a-thon began at 8:00am with healthy snacks, bottled water and a...
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has undertaken a large effort to get Akwesasne connected to Broadband internet services. Brenna Susice, Broadband Project Manager, sat down with me and gave me some information to pass along to our readers. The project is moving along, and soon you will be able to choose from a provider of services and service packages. But what are those services, and better yet for those that don’t know, what is broadband Internet? There is a far more complicated explanation d...
On Thursday, a group from North Shore Recovery High School visited area schools and the Seniors Center in Hogansburg, and gave a presentation for parents and students. I attended one of the presentations on Thursday at Massena High in front of a group of parents. Michelle Lipinski, Director of the North Shore Recovery High School, and a group of former students from the school, came to the area to describe what they do there. One of the first, and perhaps most startling, facts revealed is that...
On Friday, September 21st, the family and friends of Mike Thompson, recent Mann Cup MVP, gathered to celebrate and laud his accomplishments. The party was held at the American Legion post in Hogansburg. It would seem that Thompson was fashionably late to his own party, but that was OK, because the entire night was his. Longtime friends, like Tsiorasa Barreiro, delivered moving comments and praise for Thompson, and even something that not everyone may have known about the recent goalie. For...
Recently, Joellene and Roy Adams celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. September 15th 2012 marks 50 years of wedded bliss for the Adams’. Joellene said, “we didn’t meet, we lived next to each other. I kinda grew up along with his sisters. Went away to work in Syracuse for a few months and when he came back around we had a date and that’s how it all started.” Roy and Joellene also share their birthday month, so they have a lot in common. The Adams moved to Boston as soon as they were marr...
Running from September 17th through October 13th, the Akwesasne library is holding a book sale. In the garage behind the library, there are tables with books arranged into native books, fiction, nonfiction, children’s, and young readers–in paperback and hard cover. There were several titles that jumped out at me, including a lot of the R.L. Steins Goosebumps series, which are aimed young readers. On top of the books, there are VHS tapes, a DVD of Star Wars: the Clone Wars, book and also mag...
The Tsi Snye Homemakers group held their monthly brunch on Sunday. This month the proceeds go toward helping three of their own make the trip to Rome next month, which, if you didn’t know, is to be present for the canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha. Sally Ann Adams, Mildred White, and Angie Sunday will be traveling to Rome, and the proceeds of the brunch will help offset fees, insurance and the infamous landing tax, which is assessed just for getting off the plane. The homemakers aim to have a br...
On Saturday, the American legion held an appreciation dinner from 6 PM to midnight. The dinner was to thank all the volunteers who helped with the Vietnam War Moving Wall memorial, which came to Akwesasne this summer. Those who attended were treated to turkey, stuffing, gravy, hash, macaroni salad, pasta salad, tuna salad, corn soup, and bread. The dinner was downstairs and upstairs they had the entertainment. First, The DJ played until 9 PM, and then Bobby Herne played until 1 AM. The wall brou...
I had a chance to sit down with Akwesasne artist Kerdy Mitcho this week, and I talked with him about his art, both the paintings and a bit about his music, and about his motivations for much of his efforts to help out in our community. Some of Mitcho’s good work is with a food pantry or donating his work to support the Akwesasne Freedom School. First I asked what he felt were his influences? Mitcho said, “My influences? I’ve got a list of about a hundred people, you know what I mean? I sat d...
This year’s Akwesasne International Powwow was held at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena over the weekend. This year’s celebration included dancers and singers from all over Turtle Island. There were 212 registered dancers, 42 registered Tiny Tots who competed, and 5 drum groups. The real attention getter on Saturday was the wind, and then the rain. The dancing and singing was moved inside, and most of the venders closed up for the day. A few food stands managed to stay open in spite of the weather...
Over the weekend at the Akwesasne Powwow, the Akwesasne Freedom School had a booth set up to raise funds to offset operating costs of the school. At the booth they sold a pulled pork dinner, or sandwich, beverages, fruits, snacks, and desserts. The dinner included a sandwich, two choices of coleslaw, beans, corn, or potatoes. A big draw was the strawberry drink, which unlike some of the other strawberry drinks being sold, was actually made with real strawberries, not Kool-Aid. The booth was staf...

Sunday was brisk and beautiful, which is just perfect weather for a Walk of Life supporting the Kidney Foundation of Ontario. In all, some 60 People participated in the walk, which was a great turnout. Sandra Bowness helped organize the event. “We really are very impressed with how many came out, we think we have approximately sixty people, and we are enjoying meeting all the other people that are on dialysis and have family member members that have kidney problems. It’s an extremely imp...
Over the weekend, McArthur Brothers and MacNeil Funeral Home held an open house, first for dignitaries from around the area, and then to the general public. On Friday, September 7th, MacArthur Brothers and MacNeil Funeral Home at 428 Second St. East, Cornwall, was shown to members of Cornwall’s local government, like the acting mayor of Cornwall, and MP Guy Lauzon, members of Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and other community leaders. Our own Randy from Indian Time made an appearance, and was q...
Lt. Dan’s had its grand re-opening on Friday, August 31. Now Lt. Dan’s is located in a new building, right next to the pawn shop in Hogansburg. Open from 3-8pm, you can find all the camouflage gear you need. Camouflage gear is not all you will find at Lt. Dan’s – no, not by a long shot. Once inside, you will notice a varied assortment of knives, camping and hunting gear, also movie memorabilia and antiques. A few standouts are the Freddy Kreuger glove, a centurion helmet and sword, and a real...
The labor trades as well as some local businesses and city services all marched down Main Street in Massena, Monday morning for Labor Day. There were Ironworkers Local #440 from Akwesasne, as well as Steelworkers Union Local #420A, Several International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Locals, and many other local and regional unions in the parade. The Shriners from both the American and Canadian side had...
