On Saturday, December 22, Tsiionkwanonhso:te Chronic Care Facility had its annual poinsettia blessing ceremony. The ceremony follows a sale of poinsettias in which those who wish may purchase one and dedicate it to the memory of a loved one who has passed on. On December 23 at Anowara’ko:wa, the Char-lan Rebels took the extra point in a shootout against Akwesasne in a 3-2 win. A goal came late in the first for the Wolves, with Marc-Antoine Kamel scoring an unassisted goal with 3:28 left in the period. On Thursday, December 17, the band and chorus programs at the St. Regis Mohawk School held their annual Christmas Concert. The band, led by Mr. Justin Hahn, played their portion of the show first, beginning with the band scale warm up, followed by Good King Wenceslas, Jingle Bells, and Up On the Housetop. On Saturday, Native Creations held their official grand opening. Offering artwork and goods from some 65 artists, Miranda Martin also offered corn soup and fry bread to anyone who came in. The space is packed with art from local artists, which is great considering they had to move to accommodate all the new material, and by packed I mean there is literally no bare wall space. If you walk into Native Creations, on the wall amongst all of the other work, there will be a piece or two that by sheer color and vibrancy, to me, stand out from the rest. Thursday evening, a family trivia night was held at the Snye Recreation Hall. Entry for teams was an unwrapped toy, which yielded a large shelf full of toys. Teams consisted of 4 players with no more than 2 adults, although it didn’t look like there was a limit on children. The trivia game consisted of three rounds. On Saturday, December 15, a benefit volleyball tournament was held to help the U15 Boys lacrosse team. The tournament was organized by Hannah Leaf and Cheyenne Lazore. The Wolves squeaked out a win in overtime against the Hawks this past Saturday at the Anowara kowa arena. Going into overtime tied at four, Justin Rutley scored the game winning goal off a shootout. On Sunday, December 9, the Kids in the Kitchen event was held at the Snye Recreation Hall. Kids and parents were invited to make pumpkin rolls and gingerbread houses and got to take them home when they were finished. The event runs from 1pm-3pm, but will usually go later. Last Wednesday, the St. Regis Mohawk School hosted Cookies and Crafts with Santa. At least 138 kids were signed in along with their families. Children had the opportunity to make all sorts of crafts, with some 15 tables set up with various activities like writing a letter to Santa, making gingerbread houses, wrapping boxes, and decorating their own giant sugar cookies. On Saturday, several people gathered to see Lisa Tiger speak. Tiger is an AIDS educator based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to the speaker, an original work of art was being created on stage as she spoke. Tiger detailed how she came to be infected, how she learned she was infected, going from HIV to AIDS, her life up to now, and her experiences with medication, relationships and marriage, child birth, and the murder of her daughter. Over the weekend the Kawehnoke Rec. held its annual craft fair. The craft fair is held to raise funds for the different activities that the rec. holds throughout the year. A community meeting was held by the Environmental Protection Agency to collect public comments about the proposed Grasse River Superfund Site cleanup.
