On Saturday, March 9, the Native North American Travelling College held a Children’s Powwow at the Akwesasne Mohawk School. With the intention of holding a yearly event that will occur every March, children ranging from infants to 13 participated in the event. Heart to Heart, Akwesasne’s fitness center held an open house on Wednesday March 6, running all day. In the morning CKON did a remote broadcast and throughout the day there were demonstrations, which included 30-minute spin classes, Zumba, and a “functional boot camp” which focuses on bodyweight exercises. On Sunday, March 3, the St. Regis Recreation Center had a corn washing class taught by Sandra Fox. Families attended, and all adults were accompanied by a child, at the request of class organizer Johanne Jackson. At the Tsi Snaihne Recreation Center on Sunday, a dodgeball tournament was held to benefit the Little NHL Team, which will be heading out soon for the Little Native Hockey League Tournament in Mississauga, Ontario. The tournament consisted of six teams for dodgeball and eight teams for the volleyball tournament, which was held on Saturday. The program, led by Linda Lalonde, teaches many skills aimed at getting people working. Key to the goal of securing work for the people who are participating is personal enrichment, or development. The Akwesasne Minor Hockey Association will be sending seven teams, along with their families, to the Little Native Hockey League Tournament hosted by Six Nations Minor Hockey Association, and taking place in Mississauga, Ontario. An Akwesasne youth is missing, and the family desperately needs your help in finding him. Timothy John Benedict-Leaf was last expected to be headed to Cornwall to go out with friends. On Thursday, Mike Thompson was honored with a dinner at Sticks Restaurant. Accompanying Thompson was the Mann Cup, which people in attendance were allowed to see. The cup, which predates the Stanley Cup, harks back to 1910 and is said to be made of solid gold. Thompson signed his jersey, which will be displayed in Sticks, as well as a painting that was given to him for his achievements by the Burns family. On Sunday, a benefit brunch was held for SaraLee Skidders at the American Legion in Akwesasne to help pay for travel to Panama City, Panama to receive continued stem cell treatments. The cost for the procedure is quite high, weighing in at $31,000 dollars, but it is for 4 weeks of treatments and physical therapy afterwards. In a surprising bit of luck, a Hiawatha belt made for the St. Regis Recreation Center and thought to be gone for good, was returned by a good Samaritan recently. The belt, part of a set of two, was made of stainless steel by Ian Seymour, and originally adorned the gazebo outside of the recreation center.
