    The Snake Island Muskies and the St. Regis Braves started the Iroquois Lacrosse Association’s 2012 season with a rematch from last year’s Presidents Cup final Thursday night at the Massena Arena.     Akwesasne mixed martial artist Lenard “LT” Terrance improved his professional record to 3-0 after defeating Robert Masson at Saturday’s Ringside 10: Cote vs Starnes at the Bell Center.     The Iroquois Masters lacrosse team from Kahnawake will be travelling to Vancouver, British Columbia to take part in the 2012 North Shore Ice Breaker Master’s Lacrosse Tournament. The tournament takes place in North Vancouver on April 6 and April 7. The Iroquois team is looking to win the tournament and are bringing with them some big lacrosse stars, both locally and from across Iroquois territory.   • Beauvais charged with first-degree murder

    Tues. March 20, 2012 – A 31-year-old man from Kahnawake is facing first-degree murder charges in relation to the death of a 56-year-old local man. Derek Beauvais appeared in Longueuil Court this afternoon and was formally charged with first-degree murder. The murder occurred on Route 207 between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday night.     Kateri Tekakwitha was one of seven new saints announced by Pope Benedict XVI today. The announcement came today after a meeting with Cardinal Angelo Amato – the prefect of the Congregation of Saints’ Causes, where the pope signed decrees recognizing the miracles needed for the canonization of both Kateri and Blessed Marian Cope of Molokai.     The Iroquois Nationals avenged their only international loss to Team U.S.A on Oct. 16th at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino pulling off a 14-13 win in the second annual Bowhunter Cup. The game was hosted by the Oneida Nation this year and delivered a great display of lacrosse by the two teams.     A young couple who live in Ganienkeh died Sunday night as their car plunged into the Great Chazy River. Mikita Fox, 23, of Wikwemikong, Ontario and Danine R. Swamp, 24, of Onondaga, were identified Monday afternoon.     The Kahnawake Peacekeepers are investigating a home invasion and robbery this past weekend. Peacekeepers were called to a house near the Catholic Cemetery around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning. Peacekeepers say four armed men tied up the elderly woman who lived in the house. During the ordeal, which lasted about two hours, the assailants assaulted her, put a gun to her head and forced her to open her safe. The suspects then robbed the house of anything of value.     The Caughnawaga Indians defeated a seriously depleted Snake Island Muskies on Saturday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex by a score of 16-11. The Muskies showed up with 11 players and the team’s leading scorer Joe Hall ended up playing in goal. Saturday’s game also saw the debut of Delby Powless in a Caughnawaga Indians jersey.     For the second year in a row the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League topped the Three Nations Lacrosse League in the All Star Game. The QSLL downed the TNLL 22-20 in what was clearly an exhibition game designed for offensive players.     After losing a home-and-home series with the Cornwall Island Redmen the Kahnawake Mohawks downed the Vermont Voyageurs on Sunday afternoon. The Mohawks lost 14-13 to the Redmen on Thursday at home and then dropped a 10-9 overtime decision in Akwesasne on Saturday night.     Both the Caughnawaga Indians and the Kahnawake Mohawks had winning weekends. The Indians downed the Akwesasne Braves 14-8 at home, while the Mohawks beat the Montreal Phoenix 13-7 on the road. The Braves were leading 4-2 after the first period on goals by Ian Phillips (2), Angus Leborgne and Mickey Gilchrist. Indians goals came from Kohe Diabo and Lakwaho McLester.     The Kahnawake Mohawks fell to 1-1 on the season after losing 12-5 at the hands of the Akwesasne Braves on Friday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex. The Mohawks game on Sunday against the West End Warlocks, as well the Caughnawaga Indians home against the Warlocks were cancelled.
