By Derrick Lafrance The Akwesasne Atom hockey club were on their way to a blowout win last Monday but the Cornwall Colts staged a late comeback and if the periods were longer the Cornwall club would have taken them down to the wire. Kayden Thompson scored three times for the Wolves Atoms club with Camrie Cook, Kenyon Shenendoah, Cruz Lazore and Tehohahiio Pyke-Rowe netting one each in the 7-3 win Monday on Kawehnoke. Akwesasne built up a 6-0 lead going into the third period, but Cornwall came...

By Derrick Lafrance The local girls were on the way to a win but a gamble by the Ottawa Storm paid off and the game ended in a tie. The Wild were nursing a 1-0 lead until late in the third period when the visiting Ottawa Storm pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and they scored. Savannah Francis netted Akwesasne's only goal late in the second period. She cut across the crease and scored unassisted. Ottawa almost tied it after the ensuing faceoff after Robin Clay of the Storm got the shot...
By Derrick Lafrance Twice a week, the Kanatakon School gym is transformed into a Dojo and local kids are learning self-defense and discipline through the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. Joe Colarusso is the instructor in the He Yee Dao Karate program and he leads a twice weekly class at the Kanatakon school and at the St. Regis Mohawk School. This year's program is down to six weeks from 12 weeks last year, but the small class size gives the students plenty of individualized training. Of the...
By Derrick Lafrance The Cornwall girl's hockey club held their annual tournament this past weekend and many young Akwesasne players were part of the Annual celebration of girls hockey. The annual event drew over 50 teams to the Benson Center and Civic Complex. Although only one Cornwall team (Novice Silver Medal), made it to the final - the local skaters did very well representing Akwesasne in the Cornwall hockey program....
By Derrick Lafrance A crisp, sometimes downright cold fall day couldn't keep the lacrosse fanatics off the field last week. The annual Fall Brawl was held at the Louie King Memorial softball field behind the American Legion and eight teams came from as far away as Onondaga Nation to take part. When the two-day event was over Black Out were Champions after an exciting final game over Prestige World Wide. Other teams making the event a success were Donny's Boyz, Onondaga Kings, Warriors, Bud...
By Derrick Lafrance There was plenty of participation at local schools on Monday for Wear Red Day. The Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Prevention Program of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has been encouraging students to take part in drug awareness by wearing a different theme each day this week. The program will run all week, and fittingly the final day is Superhero Day and the kids can have a chance to give their Halloween costumes a whirl. Many teachers and staff at the local schools also...

The Westville Fire Department took part in showing the students their trucks and equipment. They had a little display set up where the younger...

The character trait of the month was Respect and the theme of the awards ceremony was Racing For The Triple Crown - pushing the kids to read. The list for the students who are meeting this goal is long and they - as well as all the students - are to be congratulated for their hard work for the rest of the...
By Derrick Lafrance The cold autumn morning was perfect for what has become a Salmon River Central fun and muddy tradition. Last weekend, the Shamrocks Cross Country team invited schools from all over the North Country for their Seventh Annual Filthy Fun Mud Run. The event was open to the community and alumni, as well as the present Varsity and JV squads. The event featured a mud pit and water pit near the end of the course, and while it looked fun to watch the athletes stumble through the cold...

By Derrick Lafrance The last big hurrah of the softball season at the Louie King Memorial Ballfield took place, and another chapter of honoring a great ballplayer went in the books. They were Big Boys, # 9, Lil Cobras, War Party, Middgets, St. Boys, Saints, the Gramblers and Dirty Birdz. The Gramblers and the Dirty Birdz met in the final in almost total...

The rink boards were recently installed as well as new bleachers built so fans can watch their kids develop into the hockey and lacrosse legends of the future. The existing ball field will soon host the annual Snye Bums tournament (September 22 and 23), which is always entertaining, and next to the new box is the outdoor volleyball courts, which will make the...
By Derrick Lafrance For years, the Louie King Memorial Softball field behind the American Legion has been one of the favorite softball locales. A fundraiser tournament was held last weekend to make it even better. Recently they acquired two sets of bleachers from Buck White's field to make it more comfortable for spectators as well as several picnic tables. But the outfield has been causing problems: as the grass gets tall as the playing field ends, home runs that go into the overgrown grass...

On Wednesday's grand opening, the floor was cut in half and on one side soccer and badminton nets were set...
During the heat last Sunday "I'd Tap That" won back-to-back games. In their first game played at the American Legion "I'd Tap That" had nine of their ten first inning batters score to win 27-21 over "BallBusters." The Busters club had a five run third inning to make it a close game but their bats cooled off in the late innings while "I'd Tap That" pulled ahead with seven in that same stretch. This was a long day for the BallBusters as they played three games instead of the usual two. During an...

There was lots of laughter on and off the diamond with draws held and it was a very successful eighth annual event which paid tribute to a...
As the kids are taking a break from school, learning about our traditions continues throughout the summer break. Summer programs at Tsi Snaihne Recreation and the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club began recently and a big component at both places was a look at our culture. At the Boys & Girls Club in Rooseveltown, Glen Swamp was teaching the teens how to make black ash splint baskets. They started from square one, soaking the black ash splints, to finished products. The ABGC also made ribbon shirts...
The relentless hot weather lately hasn't kept local ballplayers off the field as the Sunday night Akwesasne Co-Ed league continues. Russ Oakes led the scoring with four while Kendrick Angus notched three in the win. With one each were Blaze White, Jake Rice and Nick Tremblay. After leading 5-2 after one...
The Caughnawaga Indians had a real bad road trip last Thursday. They travelled to Cornwall Island for a tilt with the St. Regis Braves and left with a 29-4 loss. Having only nine runners to the Braves full complement didn’t help. Angus Laborgne led the Braves scoring with 13 points on nine goals and four assists. Daylin Logan scored four goals, and with hat tricks were Zack Hopps, Dan Lazore and Caleb Wiles. Geoff McNulty and Sam Bradman scored twice. With one each were Dwight Bero, Derek Hopps and Kyle Lewis. Wiles also picked up four a...
