This past weekend saw a lot of action for Akwesasne players in the different leagues. On Saturday the Akwesasne Little Hawks League began their second week of games. There are three teams scheduled for this league and the ages are 8-11. There are still spots available for players and there is no registration fee. The games are every Saturday starting at 2:00. Some intense hockey action in the minor ranks took place last week on Cornwall Island. The Akwesasne Wolves Novice "B" team played South Stormont to a 3-3 tie last Monday Jan. 5. Dayne Thomas scored twice while adding an assist as Wyatt Landry added one. Ryder Sunday picked up two assists. Ethan Beaudette scored twice and Logan Currier scored once for South Stormont. The cold weather has mainly kept children inside where the only exercise they get is the X-Box controller. But the Akwesasne Mohawk School is doing monthly activities to keep students active. Late last year the school had a skating event at the Anowarako:wa Arena where students got to skate with members of the local Cornwall Colts Junior Hockey club. Teacher Shelly Cruickshank is the organizer and she recognized the Arena staff is helping out her cause. The arena did not charge for ice time....
Late last year the residents of Iakhihsohtha Home for the Elderly got some Christmas cheer from some students. The St. Regis Mohawk School Band and Choir performed at the Home in Tsi Snaihne just before Christmas. Both groups performed traditional holiday songs and were well accepted by the Elders, guests and staff. The Wolves ended 2014 with a couple of losses but also showed up for a few wins, which put an end to their skid. Akwesasne was on a nine game losing streak before a December 14th win over Gananoque 2-1. Brock Daze and Jacob Swamp scored those two. The Akwesasne Mohawk School on Kawehnoke played host to this special event which added a sparkle to the Christmas season. The cafeteria, gym and hallways were changed into a huge Santa's workshop where kids and parents took part in all kinds of holiday activities. They built ornaments, decorated Christmas cookies, created arts and crafts, and there was singing and other activities. It took a few days to get it done, but by the end of the week, the children of the St. Regis Mohawk school, directed and accompanied by Mr. Justin Hahn and Mr. Warren Potter, put on a fine performance to start up the holiday spirit. The Akwesasne Wolves Atom "B" team faced off against the Kemptville Panthers last week, but the game was cut short due to ice time. Each game must start at their designated time, and in the case of a late start, then that time is deducted from the game and the score at that point stands. The Casselman Vikings have been a tough draw all year and they handed the Wolves a big loss last Thursday at their home barn. Derek Dionne scored first for the Wolves with Nicolas Talarico and Isaac Barr assisting, but that was all they managed and the host Vikings scoring four first period goals for the 6-1 win. Students from Massena, who rarely get to look at Akwesasne and its traditions, got that chance last Tuesday. Last weekend, the once second place Akwesasne Wolves lost a pair of games. First by the league leaders and then by a team who were in the basement, but climbed out of it. On Friday Nov. 28 the hot Casselman Vikings visited the Anowarako:wa Arena and left with an 8-2 win. The Vikes jumped to a 5-0 lead before Nick Talarico put the home team in the game. The Christmas season began early at the Iakhihsohtha home for the Elderly, as residents got into the Christmas spirit. The Akwesasne Mohawk Singers Bernice Lazore, Sally Ann Adams and Minerva White performed at the Home last Friday for the residents, but soon our Totas joined in the caroling. They performed Traditional Christmas songs translated into Mohawk and soon residents were handed songbooks and jingle bells and joined in. It was a heartbreaking loss last Friday in Winchester. After a back and forth game the Winchester Hawks handed the Akwesasne Wolves a 4-3 overtime loss. Wolves points-leader Nick Talarico opened the scoring on the power play with a blast through a crowd of players with Jacob Swamp and Derik Dione assisting. The action and goals came at a rapid clip as the North Franklin Mites program participated in a "Mites Day" event in Norwood-Norfolk. The other teams were host NN, Canton and Ogdensburg. The rink at the Zappa arena was divided into two, and the teams played one 12 minute running time period. Last Thursday in Casselman the Akwesasne Wolves were badly outshot 46-16 by the first place Casselman Vikings in Casselman. They allowed three straight third period goals for the 4-2 count. The Mavericks kept up with Sergi's of Canton last weekend in Fort Covington and an overtime looked certain. After a 1-1 second period Wallace Thompson scored to make it 2-1. They held that lead into the final minute but the Canton team scored with half a minute left in regulation and nine seconds after that face off, they scored again to win 3-2. The Mavericks play out of Salmon River Central arena with games on Wednesdays....
In Bantam division action last week, Louisville came to the Shamrocks barn, but were edged out 4-2. North Franklin had a chance early to put some big numbers up as they hit the Louisville net early. Their shots got by their goalie but went wide or hit the post. Garett Engstrom scored first for Louisville as he did some good stickhandling around the crease.
