The final champion team to take a victory lap around the Anowarako:wa rink for the season were the Wolves Novice "B" team. Last week they edged Char-Lan for the Championship 1-0 to win the three game series. Ryder Sunday scored the only goal for the win in the first period as he tipped in a shot from Dayne Thomas. The North Franklin Hockey program celebrated hard work and dedication, not from just the kids on the ice, but those behind the scenes as well. A fundraiser was held late last week for Laurie Connors who is battling cancer. Friends and family got together and held a Traditional meal at the American Legion Post 1479 in Hogansburg. The food was prepared at the Snye Recreation hall and brought to the Legion for delivery and service. The last hurrah for the Akwesasne youth broomball players was last weekend on Cornwall Island. A Pee-Wee and Bantam tournament was held with teams coming in from Russell, Ontario and Finch, Ontario. In the Pee-Wee division Akwesasne Two won the championship but the Russell Rugrats had to make them fight for it. The teams went into a shootout as the home side won the game in regulation, but earlier in the tournament the Rugrats won their matchup, so the shootout was a tie breaker for first...

Last Monday the kids at Kawehnoke Recreation took to the lanes at Olympia Bowl in Cornwall on the first day of their week long spring break. Although it was fun just to run around and push the buttons, some of the children demonstrated some real form with a few strikes but also a few gutterballs. The 2015 season came to a close last weekend on Kawehnoke with a lot of sweaty, happy, tired and hungry kids. The league was played every Saturday and the playoffs were last weekend. Because of a lack of players, some played for two teams and went home with two medals, but when it was all over, Team #1 coached by Lacey Peters and Dave Thomas, took home the Gold. People with apple trees in their yard looking to get a tree load of apples got some hands on training last weekend. The Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment put on the workshop held behind the Headstart building in Hogansburg. Despite the snow and cold, the warm weather is just around the corner which made for ideal conditions to get your trees into shape. The lacrosse season started last weekend in Cornwall. The Akwesasne Women Warriors lacrosse club was at the Benson Center and it had a Hollywood actor and an overtime championship game. Rack City placed first in the preliminaries going undefeated with ten points. The Cornwall Island Sturgeon Bellies (4-1) placed second. Last week the kids in the American schools had mid-winter break so the Rooseveltown club gave them stuff to do. The ABGC hosted "Staycation Week" with all kinds of activities stretched over the week. They made arts and crafts, played indoor hockey, held cooking classes and went to Salmon River as part of their week-long Public Skate. After several delays, the Akwesasne Mohawk School handed out awards to the dedicated students. As usual, the ceremonies went over the entire day last Friday, February 20, with the early years, grades 1 through 5 and grades 6 through 8 divided up throughout the day. The North Franklin Squirts took the Tri-Town Timberwolves down to the wire but came up short 2-1. Kollin Stowell scored North Franklin's only goal in this game last Sunday. The Akwesasne Wolves Novice "B" Minor hockey club recently hosted and won their tournament held on Cornwall Island and Cornwall. Teams included North Dundas, Athens Aeros, Charlan, West Island and South Stormont. The action started Friday night with the Wolves Novice team meeting and playing North Dundas with a 3-3 tie. Last weekend was a busy one for the Wolves as they finish up their schedule out of a playoff spot. On Friday in Alexandria the Wolves built up a 2-0 early lead in their game against the Glens but they could not withstand a big third period run and lost 5-4. It's been tough for the Wolves and Morrisburg Lions to get together this year to dance. An earlier game this year was postponed due to bad weather and that make up game was scheduled for last Thursday Jan. 29. Two local teams - Mavericks and Wild, play in the Northern Men's Hockey League against teams from Massena, Canton and Potsdam. The Akwesasne Wolves Novice 1 team pulled off a squeaker last week over the South Stormont Selects Novice club, 3-2. Dayne Thomas scored twice in that win including a beauty end to end rush concluding with a shot up top. Last weekend the North Franklin Shamrock Mites hockey club travelled to the Massena Arena to have a go against Massena. In this Mites division the rink is cut in half and there is only an opening faceoff. Penalties are penalty shots and the team that was just scored against takes possession after a goal. The little guys scooted up and down the ice, made finesse plays when needed, and gave high fives after big goals to the delight of the parents and other spectators....
The Akwesasne Wolves had some pretty goals last week. There just wasn't enough of them. On Cornwall Island last Saturday night the visiting Alexandria Glens scored three powerplay goals on the way to a 5-3 win.
